I've asked this question before, but I'll try again.I just moved back to St. Louis and I need to get my A. I don't know anyone with a truck and I'm not going to spend 3000+ on a school. There has to be a way to get a truck for one day to take the test in. I'm not sure about the biggest penske/budget trucks but If there GVWR was at least 26,000 and I could get a bobcat trailer with GVWR of 11,000, I figured It could be done. I mean the combination of that truck and trailer does qualify, I already have my B and I know how to shift and back. Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Best I can say is call around to some of the CDL testing sites in various places around you.

A lot of the CDL test facilities, if they're near a school will have a rental deal with the school so that anyone can rent one of the schools trucks.

C1 over in Indy is in the same complex as an Indian test facility and will allow you to use one of their trucks to test in for $150.00.

In Ohio there's a place up around sydney that does it as well and they supply auto's with really short trailers.

I've never seen a Budget truck rated over 26,000 lbs. and I doubt you'll get the type truck you are referring to rated to pull the size trailer you need .
Do you have a Class "A" learner's permit and a Class "A" driver to go with you ? How else would you get the vehicle to the testing site ?
What do you plan on doing once you get the license ? Without experience or schooling the odds of getting a job are next to none .
Insurance companies create the problem . Even if you found an O/O willing to let you use his rig his insurance company wouldn't cover you if they were aware of what was being done .

There are some same day or next day truck training services in Iowa, a couple work mostly with the Fort Dodge, Iowa office. I don't know if anything like that is available in MO. I would guess yes, but I don't know. Many states that have lots of ag or minerals have places for relatively untrained drivers to start out.

This may go away soon if it's decided you need hours of schooling to get a CDL.

Yes I have a permit, yes I have an A driver, trailer size just needs to have a GVWR of over 10,000. Doesn't matter if it's a trailer shaped like snow white, weight is weight. Small equipment trailers pulled by pickups are usually gvwr 10,000+. Apparently you've never worked for any local dump truck/end dump companies. Insurance is usually more liberal and Ive NEVER had one check references. You pass the road test, ride with a guy one day and your set. Don't argue this fact with me, I've been doing it almost 5 years.

Are there any third party testing outfits in your area? In Wisconsin, DMV doesn't even do the road test, you have to go through third party testers. Some have vehicles for the road test, others don't.

You're not saying much for dump truck companies or your knowledge of FMCSA driver qualifications . Unless the company works strictly intrastate they are required to have record of inquiries to past employers in the driver qualification files . I still say you won't find a Penske or Budget truck with a 10,000 lb. hitch . The maximum vehicle weight they allow on their car carriers is 5,000 lbs. You've never had 1 check references in almost 5 years ? How many jobs have you had in almost 5 years ? But you're right I've never worked for any companies that hire this way . They don't pay enough .

I've only worked for 3. 1 for three years, 1 for almost two years and the new one I just started at. The one in Ga never left Ga and the ones here in Mo never leave Mo. Your probably right about the Rental trucks/trailers, back to the drawing boards I guess. Your also right about the low pay, but in Ga only. Was at $13.50 p/hr when I left working 45-60 hours a week in spring/summer, 40-50 hours in Fall and 40 and under in winter. It was guaranteed 40 though so at least I was bringing home close to $500 a week even when we were not doing anything. Nothing less than $17.50 p/hr here in Mo, with regular overtime and benefits. Thats starting pay, gotta love the teamsters! Better off than OTR any day of the week.

That's about what I made in GA before coming to KY . I pulled intermodal trailers out of CSX and Norfolk Southern yards for repair then delivered them to UPS , Yellow , and CF (yup , Cornflake . It's been a while ) after they were repaired . I worked all the hours I wanted . CF would call for 40-50 trailers on a weekend . Then CSX went to strictly container and quit using intermodal .
I had a few GA tickets too . I can never figure how my CDL was never suspended . That was 9 years ago .
