I need to take my CDL test I have my permit I just need a little more driving experience I have driven a truck before from Philadelphia out to Carlisle Pennsylvania with a friend of mine when he was working for nfi at the time he has moved to Tennessee now so I'm just looking to get the license and then probably apply to prime really my hopes are to become a owner operator if anyone is in the Philadelphia area near the Philadelphiaor Bucks County suburbs area and can train me for a few hours even if it's only a few hours a day I can pay for fuel and time . Thanks

Even if you have a license its going to be hard to get on with Prime if you did not graduate from a certified CDL school maybe a big maybe a smaller company better go to a school and get trained it is going to be hard finding a job no one will take u serious if you dont.

doesn't Prime train people without the cdl's anyway I would imagine they would still want me to go to some kind of company training programI just don't want to sit there for 3 to 6 weeks with some guys that just quit here job at the 7-Eleven to become a truck driver I know what I mean I also don't want to sit around for a few weeks not making any money

The problem with getting an o/o to take you on is insurance. Insurance for a permit driver is super expensive and generally there are regulations about not hauling real freight. Also an o/o doesnt want to have an untrained driver behind the rig they own.

So pretty much a $6000 school which that's about what they run up here in fact allstate career is $10,000 I hear guys though out the Midwest and down south getting their license for about a thousand dollars so I'm guessing I would be better off just applying to prime and going to their apprenticeship program or whatever it is I would imagine insurance to be really high if I bought my own truck and became an owner operator the first year out too correct

Don't even think about being an Owner Operator your first year. If you can get insured, it'll be sky high.

If you want to work for Prime, you're going to need at least 160 hours of certified training. No offense, but from the questions you're asking, there's still quite a bit you need to read up on.

Also, be careful about going to a company school, it keeps you locked in for a year to them, which can be tough, with massive penalties for quitting within that time. CDL school may be annoying, but it will get you some more driving practice as well as teaching about federal regulations and whatnot, and it is just how getting into this industry works now. The cost of schooling can also be reimbursed by many starting companies. Just look for or ask about tuition reimbursement.

things have really changed, my first driving job guy interviewed me, tossed me the keys and said, "take it uptown and get your cdl". I went up there, studied the book a couple hours and took the test, then took the driving test and got my license.

AND, you could get a job with ANY trucking company once you had the cdl. now they want experience, recent OTR experience, perhaps recent flatbed experience. possibly a TWIC and even the hazmat endorsement has gotten harder to come by. Funny how all these changes actually wind up benefitting the major carriers as it forces most of those who want to drive to come to them with their hat in their hand begging for a couple years of experience, paying them for training and working cheap until they get a few years in. hmmmm.
