Money is in the bank for when it goes. My luck, I'll be under a load when it does. Tow bill plus repair already covered. I just cant justify doing it now when I could potentially get 1 - 3 more years out of it.

Clutch brake is worn out or broken. Grinding noise is the shift collars trying to engage into the mainshaft gears while they are still turning.

I had that in a Pete 386 with 13 spd. The T/O bearing welded itself to the input shaft. Clutch went to the floor and never came back up. I was at a shipper trying to turn around when it happened.

Mine isnt that bad. But after driving 2 other newer trucks this past summer,.. I realized how sloppy mine really is compared to how they are when new.

    A couple other thoughts.

One is if you are worried about putting a rod through the side, watch the OA results closely and ask the lab what the number mean.

Second is why don't you get an oil trap and put it on, recover the oil from the breather tube so it doesn't leak, and then you can measure your losses instead of guessing.

Pittsburgh power has a "universal" one, give them a call an get one.

Doesn't Cummins have a breather filter in the valve cover? With the miles you have on it, if it hasn't been changed then I would replace that 1st. As far as the shifter, I had a 10 speed with a very sloppy stick. Turns out the nylon bushing where the stick meets the shifter forks was shot. The mechanic took an hour or two to remove the boot and top plate off the transmission and replace the bushing. Then it shifted like a new transmission.

i read somewhere that these cummins isx have a crank ventilation filter and if clogged that can cause some issues. im picking up the truck from the shop today and gonna ask my mechanic to check and see if its clogged up. im almost hoping it is. that could be the problem im having with this leak.

i even thought about doing this the cheap way with a empty gallon oil jug.

When I was on the road, I used the gallon jug thing, it worked but it didn't catcher a lot of oil, I was having issues with my compressor and dryer (replaced two dryers before the compressor got replaced). I would go through a couple gallons in a month until it was all replaced.

I put them on all the trucks when I first get them, I had 7 of them made with baffles for less than $100 each, had the dealer plumb them up and every OA sample, the oil is drained and put back into the engine. Really simple, can't see how PP can charge so much.
