Grease hub blew out and started white smoking. Once I let it cool off can I limp it to the repair shop without causing any damage. Shops 6 miles away and 42,500 in the trailer.

    I’d guess there’s damage already.

One camp might say if it’s toasted then you can’t do much worse -

The other might say roadside repair that will be expensive, but if already damaged, . . .

Hard to say without being there. How long did it take to stop smoking after you stopped?
Is the shop able to come to you and chain up the one side?

Yes. They ended up coming out and putting a chain on it. It stopped smoking after about 30 secs but it got hot enough to melt the see glass. So I’m guessing the spindle is going to be shot.

If it quit smoking that quick, then you may get lucky. It would be a good idea to have the other three serviced.

I bet its still salvageable. Have seen them cooked bad enough the bearing rollers were starting to burn and the spindle was still ok. Takes a lot of time and patience to get it cleaned up right.

Drive it slowly and hope for the best once at the shop.
    Spindle is likely okay.
Make sure that you get them all done, they are obviously overdue.

Op did you take a pic of the melted sight glass.? I'd like to see that.!

On my old truck I paid to have a leaky steer axle wheel seal replaced. They did a sheety job, & 80 miles down the road I stopped to check on it only to see this.. The glass was not convex, & clear 80 miles earlier..

When you get going stop soon & put your hand/temp gun on the hub to make sure she ain't burning up on you again..

Great pictures, great thread! :D

Obviously--checking the fluid levels there are part of any decent pre-trip inspection.
