Grease hub blew out and started white smoking. Once I let it cool off can I limp it to the repair shop without causing any damage. Shops 6 miles away and 42,500 in the trailer.
Need help on the fly. Trailer wheel hub (grease)

I’d guess there’s damage already.
One camp might say if it’s toasted then you can’t do much worse -
The other might say roadside repair that will be expensive, but if already damaged, . . .singlescrewshaker Thanks this. -
Hard to say without being there. How long did it take to stop smoking after you stopped?
Is the shop able to come to you and chain up the one side?singlescrewshaker and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
singlescrewshaker Thanks this.

I bet its still salvageable. Have seen them cooked bad enough the bearing rollers were starting to burn and the spindle was still ok. Takes a lot of time and patience to get it cleaned up right.
Dino soar, singlescrewshaker and MartinFromBC Thank this. -
Drive it slowly and hope for the best once at the shop.
Spindle is likely okay.
Make sure that you get them all done, they are obviously overdue.singlescrewshaker Thanks this. -
Op did you take a pic of the melted sight glass.? I'd like to see that.!
On my old truck I paid to have a leaky steer axle wheel seal replaced. They did a sheety job, & 80 miles down the road I stopped to check on it only to see this.. The glass was not convex, & clear 80 miles earlier..
When you get going stop soon & put your hand/temp gun on the hub to make sure she ain't burning up on you again..Rideandrepair, Dave_in_AZ, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this. -
That must be some great shop...singlescrewshaker Thanks this. -
Great pictures, great thread!
Obviously--checking the fluid levels there are part of any decent pre-trip inspection.
--Lualsinglescrewshaker and MartinFromBC Thank this.
