I think it is still one of the best......doesn't get the fuel mileage of the new
ones.......still the most dependable engine available. Never have to tow it in
because of a 25 cent computer problem that costs a thousand dollars to fix.

The CAT dump trucks were built by International.OLDSKOOLERnWV Thanks this.

I was told a week or two ago that Caterpillar has been planning on getting back into the on-highway motor market (my company is big on CAT's and got the news direct from Peterbilt AFAIK). Timeline is still just rumours and speculation, but apparently it's happening. Whether it's going to be after-treatment equipped or not is unknown.
I can't fathom the idea of getting a brand new yellow block under the hood from factory. What next, Spicer is going to start releasing twin transmissions again?Lepton1 and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this. -
Twin Transmissions....???? Let's hope so!!! That would help get a bunch of flunkies off the road.
rocknroll81, Zeviander, Hammer166 and 4 others Thank this. -
That and keep the repair shops busy....Lepton1 and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this.

Cat recently partnered with Navistar to build on-highway trucks and they were garbage. It's recently split and "both companies will have the opportunity to leverage certain joint intellectual property, collaborate with suppliers and utilize licensing agreements moving forward."
Lets hope that doesn't mean Cat branded Maxxforce engines!Lepton1 Thanks this. -
That article is 18 months old.... just saying..

Isn't that thing only like 400 cubes? They used to put those in school buses. Also the 3116 went in school buses and army trucks. That thing was really a gutless Wonder when hooked to a slush box Allison automatic.noluck Thanks this.

I have a 19,000 lb. truck empty. 5 speed manual. (Yes the slushbox tranny eats up the revs.)
Took a while to get the revs and turbo spool lined up so my ham-fisted driving style
could coexist with a little kitty Cat. I got 'er now. Can actually accelerate uphill!!!
Got a zero miles NEW short block from Caterpillar; not a undercut rebuild.
So far, so good, but don't jinx it. Tops out about 85, but I save that for the smartasses.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Put almost a million miles on a 3406b only had to the mandatory overhead at about 350k.
Only thing it ever broke down for was a bad idler bearing for the serpentine belt. Sold the truck and last I heard it was still going strong hauling logs.
