He also really hasn't applied to that many companies according to post 27. I mean....anywhere in Illinois is cool. He could live up near Chicago or live closer to St. Louis. I think you're more correct on the recession part. Freight is down and companies are picky.

My question is... Why are companies still hiring if freight is down? Are people still quitting during their first year, and they need people to fill their shoes? I know my company is different because we're flatbed and we hauled 95% percent sheetrock and we need drivers, we're constantly hiring, we have so many loads that loads are sitting on the yard and they're giving me loads to pickup and deliver Monday ( tomorrow) when it was supposed to pick Friday, it's a short haul 140 miles load though, plus I have a 7AM-3PM delivery window so I can make it, still, I don't get it for Dry Van and Reefer though.

Every trucking company goes through Illinois. Great place to be.

Drivers still quit, and drivers still get fired. There are a few companies that even in a downturn can keep drivers busy. People are always going to need and want items. They may cut back, but unless everyone completely loses their jobs, there will be some movement of freight.

New drivers are quitting because they didn't know what they were getting into, they have wild ideas about what this job really is, and trucking companies make money moving freight, not fulfilling newbies dreams.

I’ve had good luck with buying vehicles on Craigslist. Always buy beaters cheap, probably about 20 or so over all. Never really used it for a job myself but I still look. So far I have not been cerealed or kidnapped, but it only takes 1 !
