I would start by cruising by their "yard" and observing the operation. Is said yard (assuming they have one) a truck friendly operation ? A shop, business office etc ? With just 5 trucks, they could operate out of the owners house, I suppose, since most of the time the trucks are out running. And he could use a local mechanic to work and service his trucks instead of hiring shop personnel.

Google, research his DOT#...Craigslist seems to be good for local jobs, but those OTR postings always seem a lil bit fishy.

Ask about the turnover rate. That's a telltale sign of a good small company. Our turnover rate is near zero. You don't get a job here unless someone retires or is fired. I waited nearly a year for an opening.
