A guy at the TA asked me for cash to help fix his motor home, even had the coolant hose to prove his story. I declined his request and watched him go straight to the next target. Fastforward a few weeks and the same guy with the same coolant hose was looking for cash again, I informed him that I recognized him and asked him how he would feel about being swindled for cash to feed an addiction. He wandered off to likely continue his shenanigans.

Point is, I'd like to help someone with a legitimate issue but I'm not sticking my neck out there unless I can essentially verify the legitimacy of the claims. Far more often I'll offer assistance with a flat tire or wrenching on a rig if the situation doesn't appear to be off in some manner.

Last tire I changed for an old couple passing through Idaho I ended up with $60 and a bottle of French wine! They left with 2lbs of homegrown beef and a positive story about visiting America!

As for the guy with the coolant line, I'm hoping to give him a fake $20 next time I see him so his dealer can penalize him as he sees fit! Pipe dreams...

Last ride I gave was to an older couple who's RV caught fire somewhere along 287 'tween Wichita Falls and Amarillo. Lived about a mile from me, that was a no brainer. But the average dweller that I don't know? Chances are slim... slim enough to make a backrow crack ##### look like Rosie.

Years ago took a trip to Texas with the wife and kid in her car. Her car the duel gauge was broken so I had a 1.5 gallon gas can for just in case. Well we were at a gas station getting fuel and a scammer comes up asking for gas money. I offered him the small gas can and surprise, surprise he didn't need gas and started some other bleeting that I ignored.

It’s not my job to be your charity. I’ve been scammed too many times out here for someone’s sob story.

If I see someone get a flat or its a car I've passed or has passed me a few times on a trip I'll trust the legitimacy.

Yes a sad part of life unfortunately mate, think it's just a sign of the times we live in, once upon a time in our Grand Daddies day it did exist. Its a pity truckers can't unite and stop at the California border make some of the politicians take notice that's for sure. But while truckers don't get together on the matter they'll continue facing some of the draconian laws their government enforces on truck drivers.
