    "Not for hire" is one of the most misunderstood things told to drivers. Private carriers and service trucks over 10,000 lbs and cross state lines are not for hire, yet they require DOT numbers. So too would a landscaper who runs,a 10 wheel dump truck across state lines (think northern New Jersey or southern upstate New York). Not for hire means you don't need operating authority.

    I got in trouble once like that. Had on a load of tampons, told the woman dot officer I had a load of man hole covers. She looked at paperwork and told me to “Get Outta Here!”

    I used to book RORO trips on PRIMMI and would tell the person it was 'Flammable Liquid NOS' and they would demand the actual product name; "Sure it is 1,1,2 Trifluromethylethyleither" and their reply was 'Right, Flammable Liquid, NOS'...
