OK, so I had an ad that said 60-70cpm AVG. Guaranteeing the 60cpm minimum. This guy applies, takes the road test then says that he's unsure of the pay. I informed him that it was 55cpm + $100 a week irrevocable bonus + $30 tarping fee on a Conestoga.
He called me today and said that he felt that I was dishonest and couldn't work for me. ???? WTF???
This guy told me nightmares about people wanting to charge him wear and tear on a company truck amid a ton of other crap. We have 12 trucks and 10 drivers. Only one driver has been here less than a year, All others more than 3 years and 2 drivers for 6 years. And truck # 11 was fired, not quit. We bought our first truck in 2014, only had trucks for 6 years.. Wouldn't you think that this low turnover speaks volumes?
Here's my MAIN 2 but not only questions:
- What is it that motivates drivers to take a job?
- What do drivers REALLY want in a job?

You told him .60, he wanted .60. Could have kept the $100 bonus and added .05 per mile he’d have been happy.
Some people can’t do figures, it’s 2+2=4.
Not 50-46=4 or 16 divided by 4 = 4Opus, Western flyer, 86scotty and 1 other person Thank this. -
Some drivers really don't want to work and when they do, they constantly complain and whine.
You are fortunate that the guy backed out.
That guy is probably a job hopper and bad mouths every company he's ever worked for.Lonesome, Tug Toy, Midwest Trucker and 2 others Thank this. -
I think being straight forward is the best bet. You advertised a particular cpm but then came up with some math to make it work even though you don't pay that CPM. Far too many companies play with the words and then don't deliver on what they said.
According to your actual pay plan it's sounds great but I would be dubious if I called on that ad and was told what he was.
As for your questions... #1 honesty and communication. #2 to be treated as a professional and not a steering wheel holder.Lonesome, Accidental Trucker, 650cat425 and 2 others Thank this. -

The very first thing you do is lie to him about pay and you expect him to trust you?
Plus, phrasing it as a bonus means I might not get it depending on what random criteria you decide for the bonus. For example my last job had a bonus for mpg if it was 6.5 mpg or less. Then I was assigned a truck with a Mercedes engine that would not get above 5.5 bobtail.
Just be honest in your ad.Last edited: Jun 25, 2020

Sounds like great pay plus NO TARPS! But .60 is .60, not .55, even if there's $30s for sliding the box and $100 for the hell of it.
When I was a newer driver I fell for a lot of the bullcrap recruiters and companies told me only to find out it was crap.
A lot of guys are wary of being lied to, tricked, cheated... sure, you're a good company but any red flags like that .5 will have a lot of guys second guessing you.ttnae Thanks this. -

NO you stick to your ad and stop playing a game.
If you said 60 cents, you pay 60 cents, no if, ands or buts involved.
You add the accessorial fees to the picture after discussion the base rate, not try to dazzle the driver with adjusting the base rate, calling something a bonus or trying to adjust a base pay because of the need to fill the seat with meat.
You said minimal 60 cents, that is the base rate.
Is this a 1099 or employee?
If it is a 1099, you better have a solid contract for both you and the driver's benefit, SPELLING OUT everything. This is because if you don't and he sues you, taking that ad to court to show you lies will force you pay a lot of back pay plus the taxes involved when the IRS goes after you.Western flyer, Dale thompson and G13Tomcat Thank this.
