I'm a new trucker and will have to deliver to n
NYC. I'm a little intimidated. I hope this doesn't ruin a new career. Plan on gettin a good GPS, trucker map, got the TruckerPath app, etc. Hopefully my trainer will help me. Should I just not even do this?

it can be done i personally hate it with a god awful passion and refuse to go back but yes it can be done first off ditch the gps my randmcnally 720 apparently shares my hatred for that city and literally tries to reroute me away from it even if im going in to queens or the bronx. why i have no idea i have checked all the setting multiple times it's crazy. read ur atlas closely another thing google maps with street view is a gift from god i remember when i went in there after hurricane sandy i studied google maps for hours planning my route including back up routes.

know ur true height measure ur truck if u have to

bridges tend to be marked 1 foot lower then they actually are to compensate for snow but that is not guarenteed for ALL bridges

stay away from brooklyn as i said it can be done but not recommended it is NYC on the medium setting and definatly stay away from Manhattan if u have a 53' ft u need a permit that is NYC on really hard setting lol

good luck but remember plan ur route

now the 4 wheelers they are of a different breed they are ALL suicidal plain and simple but dont get intimidated i swear they can smell fear use ur size and horn and show them u are not afraid

cops there dont care about #### it seems

I go to Brooklyn quite a bit, we drag 53s into the Brooklyn Wholesale Meat Market often, and go to Hunt's Point some as well. I stay out of Manhattan except to cross the GW back to New Jersey.

I got lost once in Brooklyn, and ended up where I shouldn't have been but a fire captain helped, and called a police cruiser, and those guys got me out of the jam. Don't expect regular police to help much, they have no idea of what you can do with a truck.

Avoid the rush as much as you can. Listen to 1010 AM for traffic reports and you will learn to know which way is fastest, also, the shortest route isn't always the best, I have found it's better to go to Hunt's Point from Brooklyn via 278 to 495 to 678 across the Whitestone and back west on 278. the left turns are easier than the right turn coming across the RFK.

You also miss the few blocks of the BQE that is a parkway and you are supposed to get off and back on pulling a tandem trailer with a tandem tractor.

Look it has all been posted before(so search the FORUM a little)BUT--like the old saying goes believe 1/2 of what you SEE and NONE of what you hear.......
Don't let the stories intimidate YOU--most of em are total BS--it is like any other urban area--and can be a PITA--BUT--when you are there--look around at the 10,000 plus other trucks there doing the same thing---every day 24/7 365--if NYC was 10% as hard as some of these folks claim it to be--the entire city would STARVE TO DEATH
Just relax--take your time get good directions--and roll with the flow and like I said--there is some very good advice here on other threads--including a link to get the NYC DOT truck route map--that is very helpful--and while others say the cops don't help--actually for the most part they are pretty cool--IF you approach them right........
The one other hint I'll give you is the NYFD--and theres a firehouse about every 5 blocks or so it seems--these guys are cool and KNOW the area--and how to get a large vehicle around--DONT BE AFRAID to ask one of them--just DONT block their driveway--LOL

I decided not to do this. I didn't go back to day 2 of orientation after our first break. I just couldn't shake the thoughts and feelings against it. I don't want to risk losing my license due to a bunch of points from being a noob. And I don't want to end up in debt somehow to this company. I probably already am.

If you do not feel you can safely and confidently do the job, you have made a wise decision. It is not for everybody and there is certainly no shame in moving on to other things. Best of luck to you.

I was about to ask for the address of your delivery. I and many others could have given you turn by turn directions into the place. It's not near as bad as many make it out to be AND the other motorists and NYC'ers in general are actually real nice people overall.

Im 100% agree with you, do what you can do let me say something about nyc here,. i have seen drivers talking about truck gps and all kinda stuff i went to nyc with my rand mcnally once i get to the city this SOB says warning low critical bridge violation and it won't stop recalculating and thank's God i knew where i was going when you are new to an area like nyc you better know what you doing how about you plan your route and you make a turn and facing a bridge says 12'6 you will be like oh yeah that's 13'6 and you will hit it i ask a dot guys after getting me out a restricted truck area he told me i would go under a bridge marked 12'6 with a 13'6 if it's a state highway or a truck route and if you don't see a sign says truck over 12'10 go straight or turn right then you made your own turn without follow the truck route sign don't even think the marked 12'6 bridge will be 13'6 not all the time but most of the time.

GPS is worthless in NYC... does not work. Do not follow it.

Iade a wrong turn about a week ago and got myself in a bit of a pickle trying to get off Broadway and back onto the Maj Deegan... when I can to an 11.2 construction. As I was trying configure out how I was going to get out of there a guy came up who happened to be a truck driver and was walking back ton his truck parked on the other side of the obstruction... He jumped on the running board and guided me around it, on Tue way we can to an 11'8 clearance...NHS said go ahead its OK, I am 13'6"... he said no problem, I said are you sure... he said do it, so I did it slowly and made it under... those ###### clearances in NYC make no sense to me... no rhyme nor reason it seems like.
