Backing into a dock at the Campbell's plant in NC, I hit one of those yellow poles with my passenger bottom step, pushed it forward to hit the fender. It still works as a step and obviously doesn't affect the function of the truck, but I know that's not the point. I was short on time and was going to miss my next load if I stayed and did the report like I know I should have. It's been months now, hoping for this to be my last driving position, should I tell them now?

I wouldn't tell them unless you can cover it by saying someone hit you in a truckstop or rest area. Might be hard to pull it off though because the damage probably doesn't look new.
If you tell the truth, you'll be fired for not reporting it when it happened.
Someone probably hit you at that little BP pit stop across the street from Campbells. Is that place still a BP?
Probably one of those old logging trucks with the big rough iron bumper hit you. They pull in there looking for those Lumbee indian girls that hang around there.

    If not asked, say nothing!

Just replace the step before you have to go to a terminal. Might be hard to say someone else hit you because that yellow paint is real hard to get off, trust me. The way it sounds you have the steps on fuel tank? Those steps can be found for $100 give or take depending on what you have.

If it's been months why are you thinking about it Now?Also sometime during then and now a company mechanic had to have seen it,I assume none of those guys said anything. But since you broke the step you should pay to have it fixed.

He can write it up on a post trip inspection and be done with it. Now, go back to sleep; you've caused enough mayhem for one day.

Well, now that this is on the net anyone can read this. Including your boss.

Call it in. There will be a bit of yelling. Depending on the damage to the step and whatever is on or in it and around it or what you pushed it into will add up to pretty goodly amount of damages?

    Preventable? Yes.

Never get in a hurry and never worry about the next load until it's on your 5th wheel. If it ever gets on it. Someone else might replace you and go get that load....

We all make boo boos. But this industry is very disposible of newbie drivers in the first year and essentially erases them for things like this. Call it in and hope that you don't get fired. Get that truck fixed. Don't lie.

Like all things in life, this too shall pass and when you get back on the road years from now you wont hit any more poles docking.

Do you have another job lined up? Personally, I have never let a job or person get the best of me. Since it has been months, if the damage is cosmetic, get the parts and fix it. The problem now is if you step up, they will most likely terminate you for not reporting it, if you don't fix it, same result. I did not think 25 years ago when I left a position that required a Class A CDL, I would ever need it again, but I am now waiting on a list for a voucher to get my Class A CDL once again, and went to school 15 years ago to get my Class B CDL. This could have been avoided had I kept my Class A CDL, I would take a quick refresher, now I am starting from scratch.
