Perhaps your sister could give you some idea of her income? I'm willing to bet that it's more than 30k. :)

Unfortunately, my sister isn't driving truck right now, but rather is spinning her wheels around a tiny international airport in our area doing transportation and making a very measly hourly wage. For the life of me I can't understand why she hasn't hit the road in a truck, but I'm sure it's because she's a single mom too. But now that our kids are grown we can hit the road!

Blairandgretchen, I read your OD post. That's terrific information! Thank you for logging all that! Good for you and your wife! Now you're all set. I hope to do the same, after being a free food bank low-income single mom working 2 and 3 jobs simultaneously for years! I've worked sales jobs, transported people via limousine service (sometimes driving 11-14 hours for a measly $15 an hour), and worked jobs at home all at once just to make ends meet. It's been very many long days and 7-day work weeks for me for years. With all this I was lucky to see $22,000-$25,000 a year. My kids and I kept the heat off last winter so I wouldn't have a huge ugi gas bill (we live in central PA). We wore coats inside, went to bed fully dressed with coats on, used 5 blankets, and my kids never complained. I've found I like driving best, so that's what I'm focusing on, and it's Class a all the way for me! So, needless to say, I'm EXCITED!

Your randoms come from the Safety Department or your DM. They will send them over the Qualcomm and they will send the assigned location for your test. You have two hours to get to the testing facility and test, which is usually in the same town you're taking your break in. If your clock is down for a break, just take a cab over and send your boss the receipt.

    JenV Thanks this.

Agree with the comments above... If one "story" is counter opposed to what everyone else is saying... Well, it's questionable.

And YES, this forem is an awesome place to gather lots of great information and feedback.

If you can get in with Old Dominion fresh out off the farm that's good!

@JenV Old Dominion has a big terminal in Carlisle, PA, you mentioned that you live in the central part of the state. I'd definitely check in to them...

A company being a "stepping stone" depends on your ability as an employee to commit. I highly doubt any North American carrier WANTS only new, inexperienced drivers. They'll do lots to keep safe, committed drivers.

In the trucking industry, it's hard to find drivers willing to not look for greener pastures. People are always looking at the higher rate on the other side of the fence and not considering how reliable the miles are.
