I just got off the phone with a retired trucker and was telling him my "concerns" with OTR driving.

Anyway, he told me that at the start, NO COMPANY will let me go OTR by myself...AND that i will be driving as a Team Driver (when i start OTR). Kinda makes sense. What company is gonna let a newly licensed CDL driver take a 80klb rig around the country by himself.

    Can anyone confirm this?
    Is this true?

    ~much appreciated!

Everything will require a trainer first before going out on your own. You can consider that the "Team Driving" before going out solo. Typically around 5 weeks is all you'll be doing that, then yes, they send a newly licensed cdl holder out on his own OTR.

sadly, quite a few companies consider a student/trainer as a real team

    sad, very very sad

I lost alot of respect for a company I worked for when they accidentally told me that

    That's a terrifying thought - an 80 lb rig!

In CDL class, we had a Protread video on handling 80 lb rigs.
It's not easy. Need permits and police escorts.

    Wooly Rhino Thanks this.

If you want to see home most weekends, check Sunstate Carriers.

There are a lot of companies that will send a new driver OTR right out of the gate.

Every company will give you a Road Test. The road test is for the Company to see if you are ready to go out by yourself or if you need a trainer. Each time you apply with a new company the process will be repeated.

No company in their right mind, which does not include CR England, would allow a newbie to just show them a license and jump in the truck. However, you could be a newbie to trucking who has driving around the farm for his either life and making you go out with a trainer would be a waste of time. So the road test will help make the call.
