I was contacted by a gentleman looking to sell his 1993 Pete 379 with a 3406B, 18 speed and the big sleeper. Looks like it’s in great condition especially for an old truck. I’m not familiar with a mechanical Cats, but do know a fair amount about mechanical injection. Unsure if it has cruise control right now as I forgot to ask. Found that there is a kit to set that up though. From what I’ve read the 3406B is pretty set at 425hp as opposed to an E that will happily live with a bunch more power. The 3406E engines aren’t easily found around here it seems though. I’m looking for a truck that doesn’t require e-logs, and this is definitely a good candidate for that. BUT would the novelty of the old “four and a quarter” wear off in a short amount of time? Trying to get set up to run flatbed around the mountainous northwest as an O/O if no one is familiar with my previous posts.
OTR in 93 Pete 379 3406B?

I spent my life as an owner operator, I retired with a 6NZ cat 550HP. Any day of the week I would have rather had my old B model Cat back. Don't worry about the little "four and a quarter" It can be made to pull.
Best truck I ever owned was like the one in your pic. big pete, 425 cat, 18 speed. I don't think there is any novelty with that truck. It's perhaps the best road truck ever built. Just an old mans opinion.Oxbow, misterG, Justrucking2 and 5 others Thank this. -
@wore out will tell ya all ya need to know bout them old Petercars and mechanical Cats! I say go for it... Theres always room for improvement.

Talked to the guy, and it does not have cruise control. One of those aftermarket cruise boxes would be a must. It does have the hand throttle, but that wouldn’t work well with all the mountains here. For the shape it’s is and the price he’s asking I would have a hard time passing on it. It’d be nice to make it run better than the 475 horse ACERT Cat in the T800 I currently have to use.

It’s purdy, I likes it.
What range is he asking - and what rear ends?
Any rebuild history? -
I can't speak about the Cat motors but I bought and old W900 with a Cummins N14 last year and I love the truck. It runs great and has been super reliable. Old technology just seems to be more reliable and easier to work on.
I had to do a bunch of random repairs on mine so having some extra money came in handy... Mine was missing a bunch of the AC parts so I had to put in an aftermarket AC... My sleeper heat and AC still isn't hooked up. But I usually drive locally.... I only go on long hauls about 10 times per year and try to stay in hotels when I can. I learned pretty quick not to take the truck to the dealer for repairs so now I do almost all of my own work.
I haven't been able to get my cruise control working either... There are aftermarket kits available?Oxbow, Justrucking2, Oldironfan and 1 other person Thank this. -
I honestly cannot remember exactly since I’ve called about and looked at so many trucks, but I think they’re 3.55s? Says there’s 150,000 on an overhaul. No papers, which seems to be a trend with used trucks around here. Probably talked to a dozen guys the last two weeks, and no one has any records of their maintenance. He’s asking $30,000. Seems reasonable (to me, maybe I’m screwed up) considering what old Pete’s go for. The market around here is pretty barren when it comes to old trucks. Old school cattle hauler guy. Also has an 85, but the sleeper is too small. And a beautiful 2000, but that’s way out of my price range.
Oxbow Thanks this. -
