I'm still keeping the option of going back to a daytime gig open, but I just wanted to try something different after 25 years.

This forum, if you haven't discovered it already has lots of info on ride-share companies and also stuff like Amazon Flex... Uber Drivers Forum

Good luck on your new venture, bad stuff will pass eventually, keep taking care of yourself so you'll be healthy when it does.

We haven't talking in quite a while Jerry! Yeah, I could never do that type of work you were doing, I'd be in the same boat trying to stay awake night after grinding night with all the grinding home drama chipping away, I feel for you my friend! I'll have to get a load up there soon and come see you.

Sounds like a good case of Sleep Apnea or just to much driving all night. Did the OP look into that

I believe Uber and Lyft are considered Independent Contractors. Just like FedEx Ground, Amazon Flex and some bread truck delivery drivers.

There's a lot of controversy on this subject on whether you're actually an employee or not. FedEx Ground had to pay out around $250 million because they got sued on this controversy. Same thing Bimbo Bakeries and Flowers Foods. It's a way for companies to treat you like Tweety Bird...cheap cheap cheap...and get away with not paying OT, benefits or retirement...but on the flip side, you have to abide by their policies...somtimes wear their Uniforms and Logo's...which technically goes against what being an actual independent contractor is.

No, sleep apnea is not a factor, I got a clean bill of health in that area after having complete surgery (tonsils, uvula, turbinate, opened palate). As far as the night driving, it was the only option where I worked, there is no dayshift.

My problem all along has been that my brain went shut down and be "quiet" enough for me to get a solid sleep much past 2 or 3 hours at a time. Add in the stress I've been going through lately, and that sleep becomes light and sketchy at best.

Yes, we're on ELD, but that's not really a factor affecting us. We work shifts, with plenty of time to complete the runs (they run between 7 to 12 hours, depending on the run). We have plenty of opportunity to take the breaks we need, but the hospitals are quite the taskmasters, as well. Loads have to be delivered by a standing appointment time.
