I'v been scouring school websites and currently a little confused on the process or what my best options are moving forward. I'm currently living in Orlando FL with a friend, my family is from Austin TX but my license is from Minnesota from many years ago.
I'm trying to decide on how to go forward with getting my CDL. Are you able to go to school in a different state or take a CDL test at a place like TDI in Florida? Or would I first have to transfer my license to whatever state I decide to go to school?
Secondly, moneys tight and i'm just looking for the most reasonable option going forward as I have bills i'm currently paying and can't be out of work for months going to school but also want the best education I can get for the money. Does anyone have any suggestions on if I would have better opportunities in Austin TX or Orlando FL. I can't decide which location I should go to school, iv been leaning between Sanford's TDI and "Community Truck Driving School" in Round Rock, TX but open to any and all suggestions.
Thank you in advance, I could really use some insight
Out of state license and school options? I'm lost

A lot of schools have weekend courses. If you cant afford it, go to your counties unemployment office and ask about the WIA. Again, the school will help you with that too. Good luck. Keep us updated. -
As you are aware there are several ways to obtain your CDL. You will find pros and cons to every option out there. You will also have people in the business that feel strongly towards one way vs. other ways.
I will provide my opinion based on what you wrote in your initial post. There are many carriers out there that provide on the job training to obtain your CDL as well as pay you to do so. This allows you to have some money coming in as you progress through your training. Yes, you will most likely be required to sign a contract stating you will be with such company for “x” amount of time. Take a look at Millis Transfer, Roehl, Schneider, Wilson Logistics, Prime and the list goes on. They all offer paid training programs. I am not here to say one is better than the other, but simply giving you some ideas. -
Sorry I forgot to mention. I have a WI drivers license and was looking at attending a community college program in IL. The particular company I was looking to hire on with offered reimbursement through that school. However, the school required you to obtain a IL drivers license, which I wouldn’t have been able to do as my primary residence is in WI.

Switch your license to Florida using your friends address or to Texas using your relatives address.
This way, you also won't have to pay state income taxes.

Trucking companies use the address on your license to determine if you're in their hiring area or not.Last edited: Dec 16, 2020

Western Dairy Transport has their own cdl school in Texas and and provides meals and lodging.
This is a tanker company that hauls milk.
Also has school in Missouri for students that aren't Texas residents.

I transferred my license to TX from FL. It's easy. You need proof of residency though.

I feel like I would have more opportunity in Texas, but I like the school in Florida more.
Any idea if any of this seems reasonable?Last edited: Dec 16, 2020
