I just started pulling tankers with prime, and I have a Peterbilt 587. I'm only on my third load, and I'm still trying to figure out how to set up my fifth wheel, so I pull in to the truckstop today, weigh myself, pull into the fuel line, and go inside to get my ticket before buying fuel. I'm 260 pounds over on my drives, and I'm only 1/4 full on fuel! The scale ticket from the shipper says my load is 47,000 pounds. Yesterday my load was 49,000 and my drives were 760 pounds over after I filled up. Somethings not right here. Today my load is 2000 pounds lighter and I was 1/4 full of fuel and my drives were only 500 pounds lighter.

One of these two shippers is lying. Either that, or as my fleet manager said today, the new style trailer I am pulling sits higher off of the fifth wheel, which directs the load to the rear of the trailer. In theory, that could explain how a load that was 2000 pounds heavier would only show up as 500 hundred pounds on the drives, but with 3/4 of a tank of fuel missing, I should be approximately another 600 pounds lighter on my drives.

Bottom line is 1) how do I handle the problem of having a truck that's too heavy when I cannot control how much the shipper loads on a preloaded trailer? 2) Somebody explain to me how removing 2000 pounds of cargo and 3/4 of a tank of fuel only takes 500 pounds off my drives?

Load less weight until you find the weight that you are legal with full fuel tanks. Then refuse to take more that that.

I use Canadian math but the density of diesel is average 900kg/m3. 1m3 = 1000L. 2x 150 gallon tanks is a little over 1000L. So your fuel capacity is near 2000kg depending on your tanks sizes.

On to your tanker your hauling. Are you hauling a different tanker trailer each load or do you keep the same trailer?

Do these tankers have dual compartments or are they a single compartment setup?

Today I picked up a preloaded trailer. I had no way of knowing my weight until left the shipper.

    1. You make it the carriers problem. That's what they are there for. Refuse to pull it until it's correct. Don't care if it's preloaded, it still must be legal!
    2. BOL's are notoriously inaccurate in their weights.

You lost me on the conversions. I have 180 gallons of capacity. I figure fuel is 8 pounds per gallon.

This loading the last load are different trailers, but they are the exact same model. They should be fairly close in weight.

So I can say "Hey, Mr. shipper… I need to jump on your scale before I leave. And if you have loaded this trailer too heavy, I need you to break the seals, remove some product, re-seal, then reprint the BOL," and they'll be fine with that?

    Just passing by Thanks this.
