Have any of you read the stories of all the fast food joints that are developing self service kiosks so you will just go to a screen and order the food yourself. That's the result of 15 buck minimum wage. It is not fair....but life is not fair. Whoever told you it was lied to you. Raising wages too fast generally results in less positions available, less full time positions, and less benefits. Be careful what you wish for. These companies are not going to employ more drivers at lower wages and have expensive trucks sitting idle. So they certainly aren't going to employ more drivers at higher wages with the same expensive trucks. Because of govt, one of the only areas associated with costs that they have any control over is wages and benefits. That's why it's the worker who pays hardest and first when anyone rocks the boat. Yes, all good drivers deserve more money. But it has to come the right, or we won't be making any gains in the big picture.

The 'poor lifestyle' can be attributed directly to the driver - no one else.
It is not a danger due to the job we do.

No one forces us to eat poorly, or eat too much.
No one forces us to go weeks without a shower, as the look and smell indicates from some drivers.
And while some companies try to force one to drive while too tired, we don't have to.
Those are choices we make, and in the end it is the driver that has ultimate control in most things.

And I know. Wages and perks isn't two of those things.
That is one reason driver turnover is so high. People trying the other side of the fence.

Does anyone think that being paid hourly will net them any more in the long run?

    My bet would be less.

Hourly will not solve anything. The washer will still be the same. Being paid for off duty time will just require you to be on duty therefore you will be able to drive less and your pay will still stay the same. Why don't you save and buy your own truck then pay yourself a high wage. Just remember the more you pay yourself the less you pay yourself and eventually, your truck is going to require that money back. Hopefully you have it. If not, bankruptcy and back to being a company driver.

Euro wishes they made what Americans make. America's GDP is higher than the entire European Union combined including England. To say Americans work harder, and a paid less than European counterparts is just incorrect. Especially after you account for cost of living.

Now of course I've read productivity increasing among American, but wages stay the same. Even though im young I think it's safe to assume that's always been the case.

Overtime pay, or any regulation for that matter may not be a good idea. Look at most young people; they cant even obtain a minimum wage job with 40 hours a week thanks to Obamacare.
