Hey all, new to hauling non-dry van loads and my last couple have been overweight on the drives. I had a 48’ hopper and a 45’ 7000 gal tanker both fixed axles at rear of trailer. Now the hopper was 81k on gross (had to get a permit) and 36k on drives. The tanker was 79,500 gross with 35,400 on drives. I moved my fifth wheel forward as far as I could and I was still at 34,800 (half tank of fuel to boot) with about 12,900 on steers.
I’ve never had weight issues before but the only thing I can think of is I recently put on a headache rack with chains and binders, surely adding about a thousand pounds. Do I just need to stipulate hauling maybe a max of 42k loads? I’m stumped here

The rack, chains and binders certainly aren't helping but I don't think that's your issue. What was the weight on the trailer axles? With liquid you're typically always going to be heavy somewhere, I was always heavy on my trailer a few hundred pounds. May need a 48 footer. Dry bulk you'll probably have to load from the rear hole if it's a 3 compartment, 3rd hole if it's a 4.

Tanker is 43’. Your problem is your fifth wheel. Trucks that pull tankers exclusively use taller risers on the fifth wheel which is supposed to distribute the weight more evenly.

####. Didn’t know about that but makes perfect sense. Sitting at a pilot in Midland, TX and looking around at all the tankers and I see a bunch right off hand.
The only thing I know about trucking is how little I know about trucking, lol. Thanks guysHiramKingWilliams, Hammer166, Sons Hero and 5 others Thank this. -
Unrelated, but you may want to do something to secure the bottom hooks on those ratchet binders. They will unscrew over time as you drive down the road.

Aren't insulated thermos bottles like that, typically heavy empty weight? Don't recall too many tankers with rear sliders. Why is that?

When I approach a scale, I try to get the product in the trailer really rocking. Most of the scales don't want to wait for your product to settle down and will green light you. Except Virginia. I always had to sit there until they could get an accurate reading.
As long as I'm not over gross by very much I don't worry about axle weights.KDHCryo, Rugerfan, Walk Among Us and 4 others Thank this. -
