I respect the hell out firefighters. My co-worker and good friend of mine sacrificed his body for the job for 25 years and his back is all jacked up now. He's gotta take shots into his back to dull the pain. He was even at the twin towers during 9/11. Doesn't really like talking about it too much...but I don't blame him though. I was around that area too when it happened, making deliveries. Luckily the work we do at the PO isn't all that difficult...so everything worked out for him :)

An ex coworker of mine near 25 yrs ago left a good union job to become a maintenance manager for the trucks at the main PO in Mpls.
    He is now transportation director.
Called him last year on a whim to check on a position and he told that while the work is easy, it's the seniority that keeps people there. Everything is nights and weekends for the new hires and a 4 yr pay scale to full rate.
Probably be good deal just for the benefits like you say but I'm too darn old to start over .

School bus drivers are something special. They cannot interact with the kids in anyway. Just drop them off at their designated stops.

I would not last 10 minutes driving a school bus lol.

It depends on what positions you apply for and what level they are. We have bargaining employee positions (union) and administrative non bargaining (non union) positions.

Practically every position you apply will be a union job. EAS administrative positions, such as a supervisor, manager, plant manager, MDO, postmaster, etc., are non union positions and they pay the most. A transportation supervisor is a level 17 position and it pays around $32 an hour to start and tops out around $45 I believe. Transportation manager is a level 20 position and they run they whole transportation department. They're a level 20 and I think they start off around $35 an hour and top out close to $47-49 I believe. I'd have to look at the EAS pay scale to get an accurate measure. They make around $90k a year I think based on a 40 hour week. EAS positions don't pay OT though, all straight time, whereas union positions tend to pay OT after 8, doubletime after 10, and double and a half after 12. Union jobs tend to pay more in the long run than non union because of the OT.

    Dennixx Thanks this.

How do you mean talk to them, yes they can, they can tell them sit down, they can write them up, have the bus wait till a cop shows up if its a bad case on a highway, or have there principal waiting when the bus stops at school. They can do a lot short of touching them or their backpack of course. However, the principal or teacher can check their bag without their consent.

Ok I see where the problem is.

In the deaf school to communicate is to use your hands. Drivers did not use hands often if at all. Aides were with them for that purpose. And they were not limited in the ways you describe them now in my time.

It's been quite awhile since I've been down that way, but I do remember a lot of sand being moved around, you could get yourself a tandem, get hooked up with a redimix co and be an O/O, work when you want. If it was me I'd start a tree service, all you need for that is a single axle dump and a wood chipper(a little queerboater wouldn't hurt either). That might be a little bit labor intensive, just a thought. Good luck, whatever you do, God bless and thank you for you're service.
