Figure I would ask here first, has anyone ever use a swift trailer for a personal move, its my tractor and I pay for the fuel (so I don't need to use their tractor) anyone did this before or know if they will allow it?

I'm moving and I don't want to get a uhaul for $1100 +fuel when I can just put fuel in my truck and it would work out cheaper.

Just ask. I don't see a problem if your dispatcher is cool.

Ask and see what they say. Worst case you might be able to rent just the trailer from some place like ryder or such.

OK I already know when you ask, the first thing they will say is NO. Even if it is legal they will always say no.I don't think you could anyway, legally.
First off will you be having a bill of lading for the cargo?
What if you got pulled into a scale?
Will Swift know about the freight that is in their trailer? If yes,(which I doubt they would give the OK on) would their cargo insurance cover it?

You might get away with it 'between' loads, just set your PTA out, but make sure you are On Duty Driving whenever the units are in motion. Oftentimes they don't want you to hold onto an empty trailer for more than a couple days when you're on hometime. One time I took a week off, I was getting phone calls/borderline harassment from someone in Phoenix to return the trailer to the terminal because I was holding it too long.

As far as renting another trailer to do your move, be careful there too. Ensure you get separate insurance for it because your Swift insurance won't apply, in fact strictly prohibits you in the contract from attaching to anything but a Swift trailer.

Don't comment on things you know nothing about. You don't have to have a bill of lading to move personal items. The law applies to commercial goods. I bet you don't even know you can legally do that driving off duty. You can drive your truck all you want off duty if you're on your own personal time doing whatever you want.

Yes, this is the law. I've driven 9 hours on personal time without a load due to a family emergency. I was going home and was gonna be off. Officer checked my logs in NC and said as long as I'll have 34 hours off when I get home, no problem logging it off duty because I was off company time.

When I was contracted to swift I moved using their trailer and I had to pay a rental fee for the trailer but it was dirt cheap. No BOL was needed it was my stuff. And as a contractor I pay for all the insurance anyway. At swift you will have to log this as part of company policy but as far as DOT is concerned it is personal time. So ask them all will be good

    ramkatral and scottied67 Thank this.

I know about personal conveyance, I deadheaded many times off duty once from Laredo TX to Lathrop CA and again recently from Dallas TX to Lathrop CA. Got pulled into the scales Level I, no problems.
In regards to Swift, there is no way to move their trailer Off Duty Not Driving without being in violation regardless if it is empty, loaded, on fire etc.

Then that's just company policy. Nothing to do with DOT or state/federal law.
