Anybody pulling a '53 reefer with a Pete 389? Asking because I'm wondering if a 389 would be too heavy with a fully loaded reefer. My loads are typically 42-44k. If so, what's your usual gross under a 44k load with fuel??

Yes. I'm aware of the 389 mpg vs an aero truck.....don't care.

I follow him, he's got the dry van with split axles. He usually hauls light or tries to at least. I'm thinking of buying where he got his Pete, Peterbilt Steve. Just want an inside scoop from a guy pulling heavy with a reefer.

How heavy are the refer's. A loaded 3 axle 280"wb 389 should be in the neighborhood of 19-20000 full of fuel.

    Gross weight tractor/reefer tandem trailer?

This is with 244" wb and 78" sleeper. Sleeper too big - can't get steers above maybe 11600. Trailer will hit bunk in a turn if I go forward any more. Bought it second hand with 51,000 km on it from a finance company who first customer could not make payments. Right place right time kinda thing. I make it work for me, it is a heavy unit and requires a bit more thinking as to weight distribution. My next one will have the medium size flat top I think it's 52". I don't want more wheelbase because I don't want to buy extra permits for western Canada and on occasion I venture into NYC. Overall I am happy with this combination. If I am loaded 78-80 all the time I get about 5.7 mpg. Loaded heavy one way and light return way I am seeing about 6.6. No idling/no apu- I don't operate where a.c. is for sleeping is required and use espar bunk heater for winter. My isx is rated at 500/1850. Think that about sums it up.
