The water hauling is more just hauling off too, climbing steps on a crappy catwalk rusted as hell, catwalk, we didnt have fat people on them, but I imagine a fat person would have fell through some these sites when measuring tank levels. Cleaning up areas also part the job take a hose and put in a spill area or heavy rain till empty. People dont say all the dangerous or stuff involved i mean if your willing to risk it do it but oil field will ask you do all kinds stuff a normal driver would say no my boss would pay any and all tickets not related to speeding because they knew the garbage equipment they send us with and thats not unanimaous with my company its everywhere they cut corners. Sand hauling is much faster pace and and not worth all that effort for the returns also getting paid by load is all well and good but sometimes you sit alot and your lose your ### those days and or weeks. I prefer hourly got 100-hour weeks after a while i dropped down to something manageable 75-80s just. We had one spot they didnt warn me was heavy heavy h2s because I was new at time well wind apparently changed directions. I woke up 10 minutes later on the ground. My alarm didn't go off fast enough it changed back, thankfully, or that would have ended much worse when I woke up i got the hell out of there apprently everyone else avoided servicing that place I joined the club and never set foot there again and my boss never asked me again to service them.

Is it pretty easy to find work up in ND these days? I also just turned 50.
I'm planning on staying OTR probably for the next year or two, but already thinking I want a new challenge after that and my head keeps coming back to oilfield.austinmike, Zonno and Trucker61016 Thank this. -
Dallas Federal Reserve Bank just published a survey of oil field companies. The industry is not booming and the future is not looking great right now.
Zonno Thanks this. -
I've been told it's always a boom and bust cycle in oil and gas...does this mean it's a bust at the moment?Zonno Thanks this.

Im 40. Just ran a 50 mile ultramarathon 2 weeks ago. Finished 10th place out of 90. Have run 7 regular marathons this year. I definitely got a chuckle out of a 38 year old being able to get in and out of truck, and climb a flight of stairs without getting too winded to be in shape
38 is not old at all. You should be able to easily do any job in the trucking industry without being in shapeLast edited: Oct 23, 2025
CamryXSE, Kyle G., Zonno and 1 other person Thank this. -
The oil field is completely different than freight hauling, including being more physically strenuous. That's especially true if you are on a crew or if you drive a pump truck or a hot oiler. Even crude haulers and vacuum truck drivers have to climb tanks up to 30' tall while carrying a tray full of tools or dragging a skimmer hose, sometimes while wearing SCBA.

Yea I work in the oil field, which is why I’m on this forum. You don’t need to be in shape to do any of that. Maybe not be 300-400lbs, but not in shape either -
We’ve all seen drivers like that at truck stops, though pretty much all of them are older than 38.
