Welcome to the club. There are quite a few of us (over 40, college education, never done anything like this before, our friends think we've gone off the deep end, etc.) that are driving trucks now.

    Swamprat55 Thanks this.

Food service jobs pay real well and are local or regional being home several nights a week. Always ignore "experience required" and apply anyway online and follow with a phone call in a few days.

Here's some flatbed companies with weekends home program:
Probably make lots more money with Maverick.

    McElroy
    Maverick

Tanker/hazmat will set you up for some good paying local work after 6-12 months experience;try these for good experience(they do hire new CDL grads):

    Schneider Bulk
    Trimac
    Superior Carriers
    SVTN
    CTL Transportation

    A few Food Service companies:

    Sysco
    US Food
    Golden State Foods
    Lily
    Blue Line Foodservice

My other post I tried to list the best paying jobs; here's some more to research. Start a list of companies you're interested in so you're prepared to start the applications as soon as CDL school starts.

    drive4hogan
    Waste Management
    YRC Freight
    Advance Auto Parts Hub Driver
    Ferrellgas
    Boyd Bros.
    MCT Transportation

OK, lots of researsh to do but it will be worth it. Planning well will prevent you from a poverty wage trucking job. Get all the endorsements; doubles/triples, tanker/hazmat, TWIC and a passport for enterning Canada. Best wishes.

That is just totally incorrect, like at Prime they will give you a letter of temporary residence so you can get a M.O. license, then Prime tells you have 60 days to switch it to your home state. Now they wouldn't let us test for Haz-Mat cause they said that it does not transfer from state to state, that we would have to retake the Haz-Mat portion again in our home state.

As well as how your residency status is affected. Example; I looked in to attending training outside of Alaska (where I am resident) in order to get training sooner than the course is available to me here. I researched Washington, Idaho and Oregon, ALL STATES AND SCHOOLS, Alaska included, require that one possess a driver license issued by the state where you are attending training, you will be operating a CMV on the road after all as part of the training. This means that were I to attend school outside of Alaska I would have to surrender my ADL and get one issued for Idaho to Attend SAGE, doing so immediately threatens and puts in to question my Alaska state residency and my intent. Now, I could go ahead and attend school in Idaho, get and Idaho DL, get and Idaho CDL then return to Alaska where I would be required to surrender my Idaho CDL and retest for for an Alaska CDL at additional cost to me.

    Check with your local DMV.

Check how your resident status would be affected.

Check with the school you wish to attend and verify anything they tell you against what your state of residence tells you.

Really just depends on the state cause when I went to Prime without a CDL permit, so at one point I had a Kentucky Drivers license and a Missouri CDL permit at the same time and I actually live in Indiana. I didn't have to surrender my Kentucky License until I passed my CDL test in Missouri. a couple months later I switched my CDL to Indiana and only had to retake the written test. Like was said each state is different as a classmate that lives in Illinois had to retake the full CDL test when he transfered his to Illinois.

Just spoke to roadmaster in Florida and they confirmed that I would need a Florida drivers license to take the cdl exam. Each state is different.
