No, I think that's how it goes.
Sometimes a line or two just come to you and don't change much, but everything around them evolves multiple times before and during writing it down. Sometimes what's written in the end bears little resemblance to what you started with.
And for me, it's two very distinct parts. There's the mechanical fiddling with meter & rhyme, but the core is very much an emotional process, a dredging around in one's soul. The best ones are exhausting.
