So.... almost a year ago I did a refresher with my company Veriha where I'm still working. I was browsing Indeed.com and Craigslist and saw an ad for Yard Spotter posted by my company which I inquired about and I think I have a strong chance of getting it for 18.50 an hour. The nice thing is it would be an internal transfer without having to go through the application process again and staying with the same company looks better.
It would be 2nd shift 5pm to 430am for 2 facilities I've already been to many times. I'm a night person really and told them I'm totally fine with those hours. One thing I'm a little curious about is I met the guy who was the Spotter at the time. A the first facility, he seemed to be sitting around a lot in the guard shack waiting to be called. I'm wondering if that is typical of yard work in a small to mid-size company to hangout a while between trailer moves. I guess if someone is paying 18.50 an hour, I feel like I should be doing something like thumping tires and inspecting trailers lol.
Or maybe this is finally my break if I get it; a fairly laid back local job. The yards aren't even that tight for backing, but they're dirt and will suck in the winter. Oh well.... chain up and get it done.
This will be in Marinette, WI which so far seems like a nice town on the coast of Lake Michigan which I'd consider another plus.
Possible Internal Transfer to Yard Spotter

I'm sure the other guy probably started out
all gung ho but then figured out nobody cares lolhomeskillet, RedRover, Blackshack46 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Possibly, he took his experience to Green Bay or a big warehouse.
Or he took off before Winter. Those yards can be a mess. -
EuropeanTrucker and VIDEODROME Thank this.

If your company runs a very orderly yard already, then forget I said anything. But if it's a typical yard, and you start to really organize it during your downtime, it could make a big difference in yard efficiency. Obviously, ask the yard manager for their input first. -
If your otr now and switch over to yard dog it may not show any diff. on your co. time at job if you ever change jobs later?
-
Unless you are looking to get something really easy and close to home, I wouldn't recommend downgrading that much. You drive OTR currently? You might find yourself itching for the road again soon after switching and regret taking it. You might not.
What's the pay cut like? Is it worth it to sacrifice all the experience you could be getting on a local delivery driving position? -
It's weird though I'm on my second night here after training and sitting in the guard shack an hour playing with my smartphone while I wait to see if they have trailer moves. If they decide no moves are needed from me, dispatch may slip seat me to a day can to run a local load to Green Bay.
If I suddenly decide I just have to much free time, I'm sure they can find shorthauls for me lol.
As for pay, it's 18.50 per hour which is okay for this town and better if I live out of town.tucker Thanks this.
