First time hauling guard rail. Any pointers?

 

I would secure the top layer as per regs for length, usualy with a choke.

That stuff likes to settle, not to bad, but one more check past the usual should catch it ok.

 

Get ahold of it good, you want it tight if you have to stop stop quick.

 

I tightened the snaps about 5 times each and more when I stopped. Yeah, no kidding, but I fully expected it. The doubled up over the top full layer helped pull it down at loading time. I'll see what I can do, but a choke might be out of the question with the length of chains I have.

 

Brokers like to lie like that. Good you got more money. I'm guessing the broker was having a hard time selling that load, period.

Also, as long as you learn these little things from tarping the wrong way, before you know it you'll be real fast at it and won't make any mistakes, or almost none anyway.

 

You need 4 pieces of securement over the top of those 25’ pieces.

 

I'm here to learn - would 4-5 straps over the top work?

 

As long as they are properly padded. I’m kind of curious why the rails were loaded that way. If they were flipped over with the smooth side up I would have strapped the whole load.

 

That's how they stored them, and they're used, so I figure it'd be a pain to flip them over for the rare shipment. I agree, though, that it would be much better. At the rate I'm tightening this load down it's going to be a foot shorter by the time I deliver.

 

Been there done that.

Roll your tarp the same way. All the time. It’ll become second nature that way. I normally fold the tarp in half (towards the fold) and then roll. Or I’ll leave a 2-3 foot gap before the fold and roll. That way you always know to start at the front and unroll and your flap will be right where you need it.

As far as bungeeing... yeah. Done that. Scratched my head. Cursed and redid it.

Pin four corners. Do a bungee in the center on both sides. Get the tarp level across the rail. Grab a handful of bungees and get to work on either side. Normally works out.

You tarped better than most that I’ve seen out here. So you already got that going for ya
