I’ll leave hardness stretch thing out because we’ve beat it to death. However
I am curious, I agree about the stake pocket but he’s in a tough situation because a chain wrapped around the way it should would put the binder at a bad angle.

My question is how is that binder not pulling on the meat of the hook? Second that hook is waaaay stronger than anything it’s hooked to. When you hook a hook on a chain it’s side loading the hook as well as pulling on it, the chain link is basically trying to twist out of the hook and the hook is stopping it.

When you hook to the chain it's putting pressure on the hook at the bottom of the throat, pushing down into the throat, and both sides, pushing sideways. When you hook to something like a stake pocket or a machine track, and that item is pretty far out of the line of the direction of the pull, most of the pressure is being placed on the outside of the hook, to where it's trying to open the hook up.

I suspect that this is why we sometimes see binders with hooks that are stretched open.

In his picture the pull is being applied to the bottom of the hook, I’ve never stretched a hook and hook them lots of different ways.
