Hi everyone,
I'm doing some research on pre-emissions trucks (from 1997-2007) and have a few questions I was hoping I could get clarified. I'm asking specifically on the well-maintained units that have had engine rebuilds, such as the popular Pete 379s.
1. A lot of these trucks are quite expensive, reaching $80k or more. I know there is a market for these pre-emissions units, but is this market growing or getting smaller. After all, these trucks are getting older each year. Who, primarily, is the market for these trucks? O/Os, small fleets? Are buyers typically older and have been in the industry for some time or are a lot of newer, younger buyers also interested in these trucks? Are sellers getting what they are asking?
2. Are pre-emissions engines more fuel-efficient than post-emissions engines? I'm hearing differing thoughts on this.
3. How much does a recently completed engine rebuild really add to these units? I know rebuilds can cost a lot of money ($30K or more) but do they add a lot of value?
Thanks a lot for the help, everyone.

For what reason are you asking, sir?
peterbilt_2005, KB3MMX and exhausted379 Thank this. -
along with pre emissions, you also have pre eld (prior to 2000) that will effect the pricing as well. A post 2000 non dpf truck is not quite as desirable in some eyes.
Intothesunset and Bakerman Thank this. -
Check out Paul Priestas in Sandusky, OH. He has a good selection of pre-her-eld trucks
He’s in the truck paper -
Wouldn't it be easier to just get a new truck with engine warranty?
Midwest Trucker and KB3MMX Thank this. -
The OP is mistaken, though. 2007 is NOT "pre-emission". While it may be pre-SCR (2010) and pre-DPF (2007), it will still have EGR (2004).KB3MMX Thanks this. -

Funny how people think a truck payment is a huge deal though... Judas maybe we have found a big part of what's wrong in the industry if people think they can't afford that. Ugh.
Also funny how old trucks never seemed to break , whew.. i must have had the wrong older ones they were broke more often than my new ones. Lol.x1Heavy and Midwest Trucker Thank this. -
