This might be semantics but, No you don't split, you flip to high range. You Split gears in a 13 or 18 speed.
As far as shifting an 8 vs a 10, I used to shift them the same, I never used 1st in either, and never used 6th in a 10 except maybe as a turning gear. The speed difference between 5th and 6tu as I recall was about 3mph. Just didn't seem worth it to me.
Just shift your normal H Pattern and flip the range selector and do it again. Easy peazy
Proper way to shift on a eaton fuller 8 speed

Do you really need to downshift during the test? I took my test with a auto a few years ago before the license restrictions. I knew how to shift a manuel or my father taught me how to float gears. So my question is can you float gears and skip gears and also not downshift during a test? I thought as long as you are not jerking the truck or lugging it. You are fine.

You split super 10's as well.
Mntrucker91 and KMac Thank this. -
Exactly right, the front paddle under the shifter is called Range and the gray or red side button is called Split. Gray for 18 speed and red for 13 speed.
Though there is the number "8" on the gear shifter, it is technically called a "9" speed. The LO gear is counted as one of the forward gears. Basically there are 5 forward gears with Range flipped down and 4 foward gears with the Range flipped up.
Personally I don't like either the 9 or 10 speed, too much spread in rpms between shifts which means too many chances for rookies to get into trouble, I know I did starting out. Luckily our road tests were done in an old truck with gears so worn out you couldn't help but pass.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
I use an Eaton Fuller (9) 8 speed and enjoy it until a point. Being able to split my 5-8 gears while running any mountain pass would make life much easier.
The gears are just too far apart and you have to bring your mph way down just to get your rpms in line with the next lower gear.
Although, I have 1:1 with no overdrive. A 10 with over drive or a 13 would be my favorite combo.scottied67 Thanks this. -
Don't over think it or view it as a from this speed to that speed I need to be in x gear thing. I realize if you coast at in neutral you fail. But nothing says you have to Complete in x time. I'm not telling you to turtle around but rather down shift each gear one at a time at each slow down or stop. If coming to a stop there is no need in coming all the way down. Usually if your rolling at all like making a left on to an on ramp or something low side 3 or 4 will be fine. Shouldn't have to worry about low gear over and down just treat it like a 4 on the bottom and 4 on top

20 to 24 mph is the split break in a standard eaton 8 pack. 20 or above stay high and take 5th or 6th if you light/downhill 20 and lower go 4th excc... a eaton super ten you split every gear but the high low happens when you move the stick right of center by itself

I find the super 10 easier to drive thn the regular 9 speed or 10 Eaton fuller who knows why Lol
Mntrucker91 Thanks this. -
Rockwell 9's were my tranny. Oherwise it's a 13 double under, a mack 15 forward and 15 reverse and a 18 spd once.
The more gears there are the easeir it is to find something to be trucking up or downgrade with precision. Loved it. -
But what about 15sp. Inquiring minds what to know. Its a Blue knob.
