If you are going to drive between now and 5am just go straight 95s.
Dan.S Thanks this. -
If you are going around rush hour I'd avoid NYC completely. Also note the bridges are marked 12'6 going near GWB. Don't worry about it they are actually 13'6.
If you are headed north on GWB after your load than they have EZ pass lanes so you don't have to pay out of pocket. -
Mike2633 and Intothesunset Thank this.

Take 287 around New York it still gets backed up but not as bad use google maps it will help you find faster route don’t leave the interstates or highways tho that ####ing thing will take you to Bobos house and to charleens then under a 8 ft bridge haha
Intothesunset Thanks this. -
Answer is don't do it unless you absolutely have to. 24-7 clusterhump.

Again, that may or may not be a good decision, based upon the timing of the trip, when he’s clear of the city, and combined with which *part* of Newark he’s going in to.
NYC isn’t that bad, and you have to take all factors into consideration before making a sweeping statement like ‘avoid the city’.
I ran the area he’s asking about as a local driver, and it *all* depends on timing and location of the delivery. Until the OP provides more information, there’s not much way anyone can add much of value to the thread, beyond what has already been said by other posters and myself.
Not jumping on you, particularly, but it’s best when you have guys that know the area and are trying to help to just let them offer insight beyond ‘I was there once and it was awful’.

It does not matter what your weight is as long you are 5 axles tractor trailer and up to 80,000 for the Interstate Highway system
The GWB is free southbound MAKE SURE YOU TAKE UPPER DECK. They banned trucks from lower deck since 9-11.
If you are wondering what weights the bridge can take as a live load (Thats you the heavy 18 wheeler) The engineers claim that all 8 lanes are tractor trailers at 80000 each nose to tail waiting on the traffic and the bridge should be able to take it.
One time in San Francisco they had the Golden Gate Event where anyone and everyone is welcome to walk across that span. Towards the afternoon that bridge had flattened out in the center about 1/3 of it's total length due to approximately one million pounds in people. They decided that they will no longer hold those events because when a bridge flattens out it's not going to accept anymore weight.
I usually wait in either the old 76 at Phillips-burg (I-78) or in Darien until late in the day about 9PM then run the bridge at night after the traffic has calmed down. -
