Okay truckers it looks like I'll be going for the basic knowledge test to get the cdl learners permit test at the TDOT McKinney Tx. I still need to find the application for the permit and start becoming conversant with sample questions on this site. I've been browsing and the only thing that comes close is this application document. Is this the correct one?

Yes but the DMV has that also u need to get the yellow book and read chapter 15 I think. Also need to get a big white book and read the combo section. Before u go take the test do the practice test on here. Where u going to truck driving school at?

That should be it, but definitely check with the local office, there might be a shorter form to fill out if you already have a regular drivers license.

Also, which companies are you considering driving for? Several offer their own schools that will train you a lot better than the standard CDL schools like C1 Truck Driving School. That's where I went and it really wasn't worth much. If you can find a company that has their own school, there is a company in the DFW area that will rent you a truck to do the road test for less than $400 to get your CDL, then you can go to a company school that will train you right.

Get the white cdl manual, Tdot had them for free
Read everything, esp. chapters 6 and 14, then
    go back and reread everything.
First two tests are permit and combination.
pass those two and you get a permit.
then take the airbrake, general knowledge and prettip.
You need to pass all 5 of them to drive with a licensed driver.
If you don't have a school, check out North Texas Institute/ Goodwill

Troy is the driver instructor, you don't go to test until he's satisfied with your driving. A driver for 28 years, he trains you how to be a driver, not a steering wheel holder.

The guys that show up with licenses from the "rent this for your cdl test" and even some "driver training" schools... he's not happy with. The guys show up with...I have my license but I cant shift or my company says I need practice. Hmmm.and you paid how much?

    Good luck,
    Mary

I used them only to rent the truck for the road test, I received my actual training elsewhere. I would not recommend them for teaching you how to drive - just to obtain the CDL. Then you can go to a company school like FFE, Prime, Swift, or whoever, or check into the school that Krashdragon mentioned.

Here is the .pdf version of the printed handbook. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/internetforms/Forms/DL-7C.pdf
Read and understand that and you will pass the test. There were a few questions on the test that I don't think were covered in the handbook. I don't remember them exactly but one was something to do with fire extinguishers and taxicabs. And another had an answer that was a truck hauling cattle. What screwed me up with that one was it did not say "commercial" truck hauling cattle. It is a pretty easy test if you have read the handbook a couple of times and understand it.
