So apparently I live under a rock. Turns out the FMCSA passed some new law last year where you have to register your DOT card (or Medical Examiner Card as they now call it) with the licensing section of the DMV. I just found a nasty-gram where they threatened to downgrade me to a Class D license if I don't have that card registered by a date that has probably long expired by now. My MEC is still valid until next May and the law doesn't actually take effect until next Jan. So technically I should be ok I'd imagine? As usual, I always find out the bad news on a Friday so I can dwell on it all weekend since nothing is open until Monday. The letter was sent to an old address, then got lost in a big pile of mail my wife happened to go through and that is how I found out.
So am I totally screwed or do ya'll think the DMV will give me some leniency since the law technically hasn't taken effect yet? Has anyone else had this issue?

What State?
If you have not went to the DMV to Self Certify then they may downgrade your CDL.
I think the rule says that each state has to have it in place NO LATER than Jan.
Some states have been doing this for quite a while..
My Home State (MO) just started doing it.blairandgretchen and Skydivedavec Thank this. -
Montana. They've started doing it last May (about four months after I got my CDL). I'd imagine they would chop off everyone after their NLT date of January... Kinda curious if they will let me keep my CDL if I self cert before that cut-off
Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Well what's the Date they gave you?
Also it should be pretty painless...I just did mine when I was home and I was In/Out of the DMV Office in like 10 mins and I even changed my adress on my CDL.
It was not busy. I had to pay like $2.

Thanks. I happen to be in town as well. There was no date since I lost the original envelope, I got the letter forwarded to a new mailing address as I moved. I'd imagine it has been well over four months. I appreciate you looking at it though. I've actually browsed that website as well and it doesn't really give much of a deadline.

You have 90 days from the date it was mailed or you'll be downgraded to a class D. If that has happened you will get in big big trouble if caught behind the wheel of a CMV. You better take care of it asap. You have 3 months after the downgrade to fix it without retesting.
You need to keep up with the ever changing regulations. They never stay the same. You have just seen why.

utah started doing it, basically, when the rule was decided. couple years back.
my brother in law lost his cdl endorsement. and only had 30 days to reinstate it. or do the whole shpeel all over again. he did it in 14.
might be different in other states though. -
Check for the CDL division of your state DMV. AL had a website you can use to submit the initial information, and then you have 10 days to fax or mail the med card, I wasn't sure if it was the long form or the card, so they got the longform mailed to them. I mailed hubbies by certified mail. You need to hurry I guess if they haven't downgraded you yet.
Weelends are always fun to wait for bad news.road_runner Thanks this. -
