Hello!
I am currently a wannabe about to become a student (I start at the Fontana,CA facility on the 30th)
I wanted to hear from some truckers that have been to this facility as well as some that work for central.
Does anyone know the graduation % rate of the students?
How are the instructors?
I have never actually driven a manual transmission (except for motorcycles, but I don't think they count) So I was wondering just how steep the learning curve was. I am not so worried about the written tests as I am fairly good at memorization and studying. I am more or less just worried about the practical applications. Do they give you ample time to practice and master the techniques before you get tested?
Is there a chance for a retry or is it one screw up and you're out?
Are the trucks that we train on manual or auto-shift? Are the trucks actually used in hauling manual or auto-shift?
I don't have any family, or kids. I really want to go the OTR route and I don't mind being out for weeks at a time. (the idea of driving through the middle of nowhere on a regular basis appeals to me) I've done
Is it hard to grab the long distance (Cross Country?) OTR routes?
I heard that if you form a team both people end up get paying a lot more. Is it hard to form up teams? I would imagine if it was easy a lot more people would be taking advantage of it.
I also have some open ended questions I hope you could answer.
What is the one thing that you like the most about trucking?
This next question is kinda hard to word... "What is the most Beautiful/Inspiring/Memorable Memory you have while being on the road?
I think thats all the questions I have for now. If I think of anymore I'll post it via replies.
Thanks for the comments!

Weird, it posted a completely different thread... Anyway, there's a lot of info on this site if you use the search box. You'll get a few shots at each test portion, but if you aren't catching on after repeated instruction and 3 tries I believe they'll let you go. No worries, the instructors are all pretty good. All trucks are manual. My favorite thing about driving is going home! Teams make more, but it's not easy to find someone you trust with your truck, your livelihood, and your life! Everyone starts OTR. It's actually more difficult to get on the local, regional, or dedicated routes. Most memorable thing I've seen was the first time I watched the sun slip down behind the Rockies. It honestly looked like a painting. Good luck and hang on, the first year is a hell of an experience.

Welcome to the forum......You will be able to "re-take" any failed test at the DMV. After 3 failures, you have to start over with the application and fee process, however, it's very rare that anyone has to. The instructors are humans. Some might be having a bad day and some will be jovial every day. Routes aren't guaranteed, you the driver, go where the freight is. You might do Atlanta-Fresno this week then, Sacramento-San Luis Obispo/Santa Barbara-Phoenix etc next week. You might "sit" a lot or run your fanny off. Depends on truck-to-loads ratio. (in your area). Just know you need to be flexable and go with the flow. Every day is something different out here. Have patience, manage your time/money well. You carry a big responsibility. Bottom line.....it's a game and you need to know how to play it to succeed.

I see these grads at the Econolodge in Rialto while we're waiting on freight. All I can say is don't let anybody talk you into a lease purchase deal.

I'm pretty sure that CFI Fontana is under the ETP program, i.e. they administer the DMV skills and road testing, you take a completed form DL-170 to a DMV field office and receive your CDL. Only drawback, a small percentage of ETP applicants are randomly selected and must re-take the tests at a DMV CDL Facility. Kind of like random drug testing.
