It so happens that my CDL expired (had driven 13 yrs) as I was asked to work overseas by the govn't. I thought I could just renew it, but when I arrived back in Ohio for a visit, I had to start all over from a car-learner permit, then get a car license. That was no problem, but now I have to take the written CDL test which I have studied for and also should not be a problem. The question is, (I cannot get any straight info) does the testing facility provide a tractor-trailer? If not, do I need to hire someone to go with me and use their tractor-trailer? I had a 'grandfather CDL" which means I was driving about 5 yrs. before the federal CDL came into effect and never went to driving school. Thus, I cannot call on any school to assist me.
Also, what exactly does a CDL learner permit allow one to do? I had hoped to finish the whole CDL in one day. I cannot find any straight answer on that online either. I see all the companies want 'recent' experience, but then here is another problem as I have been out of the country and even with 13 yrs-they ask online for recent. If you know the answers to my questons-please send me an email-just my nic plus at y/.com or reply here. I am returing to live in southern Alabama in about 30 days if it makes any difference.
Thank you and I appreciate your help.-'Keep on Truckin'.

So, put an ad in Craig's List, and offer as much as $50 per hour. See how many responses you get. If none, bump up your offer to $100 per hour. In any event, make a guarantee "up front" payment for the first hour. The balance when you are done.
A learner's permit allows you to drive (with a licensed CDL driver sitting next to you), anywhere you want to drive. You can go cross country if you wish. However, be forewarned, that "co-driver" MUST NOT be in the sleeper berth as you drive. He/she MUST be seated next to you.
The time duration of any permit expiring depends on the state you live in. Since you are in Florida, you must find that out from them.
Now as for getting a job after you get your license. Good luck. You have NO RECENT driving experience. YOU can try to contact your former employer(s) for a reference, or a job. However, so many companies WANT RECENT experience. Again, Craig's List "might be" your best shot at a job.
If in the future, you leave the country again, DO NOT LET your CDL expire.GET HOME and get it renewed, to avoid this marlarky you will have to go through now.
In the end? I would actually RECOMMEND, that you go to a CDL school, and get the shortest classes available. This gives you a "certificate", that you have been "reasonably trained", and "might" make it easier to gain employment.
Good luck to you. keep us informed. -
If you're willing to travel, there are a couple of places in Dallas that advertise a truck and 'trainer' for around $350 that you can use to test for your TX CDL. I'm not affiliated with any of them, don't know anything else about them and don't endorse them. I won't post links or name any of them, but you can find them with a simple Google search.

There are various DMV's that have 3rd party people that rent equipment for the DMV road test. San Bernadino Ca. comes to mind, guy had a day cab with 26' flat that was clean and safe, rented it out for $150 to take the test. You might also ask truck schools if they do the same, most truck schools will do hourly if you ask them, including getting an hour wheel time if you've been out of it a few yrs.
