Alright guys well I am off so far so good first night back at my old job went okay. This has been the longest most bizarre 40 days. I left my old job at Gordon Food Service like 40 days ago worked at ABF for 40 days which seemed like an eternity and I'm back at GFS and it hasn't even been that long yet it seems like forever. Anyhow happy to be back at GFS they are happy I'm back I'm happy to be back, it just works better for me. The whole thing was so bizarre I had some trouble in January at work, things could have gone better, but whatever water over the bridge I got hired by ABF thought okay I'm in the big time now and this is the place and ABF has it's good points it really does and I thought well this is the major leagues at the best LTL there is with the top drivers. However the commute and rolling clock and all these little things just added up and I wasn't happy and my wife hated the lifestyle and I was gaining weight and now I'm trying to lose 10lbs and it's been kind of hard etc etc etc. It wasn't that I couldn't hack it at ABF on the contrary they wanted me to stay they liked me just fine there and I liked them, but it just wasn't the right fit.
Anyhow it takes years and a lot of time to get a night shuttle spot at a food company or at least used to and our spots at GFS pay pretty good for that kind of job probably the best out of all the food service shuttle companies. Although I think the guys who work for Lipari Foods do pretty good too. Anyhow usually in the past those shuttle spots used to be in high demand, well in recent years at GFS the shuttle spots haven't been moving quite as fast, but you still have to jump on them if and when they come. Usually when you quit that kind of job you can't ever get it back well that's how it used to be and still can be, but not all the time.
I quit went to ABF and ABF wasn't working out and I really wanted ABF to work I did, but it was just evident to me in the first few weeks it wasn't the right spot for me and in a bizarre twist of fate and turn of events someone was let go and Gordons asked me if I was interested in coming back to the transit team. I said yes I would be mulled it over and decided to give them another shot because this opportunity won't come again. Years ago this would have never happened, but things have changed and I was able to get my shuttle spot back. Also it helped management at GFS wanted me back wanted that spot filled and knew that I wasn't happy at ABF. My coworkers at Gordons the entire time I was away never stopped calling and when the spot came open they said why don't you come back home.
So I'm back I have a 5 year old stick shift Volvo to drive with 417,000 miles on the clock and it has new recap drive tires and brand new steer tires. It is slow, but rides smooth it's a twin screw so weights not usually an issue as far as being over weight is concerned and has a radio which is nice usually almost all the time I pull doubles with it. I am home every morning don't have to wait by the phone and have my weekends Friday and Saturday and mostly Sunday unit the evening off I have a 32 mile commute round trip instead of 140 mile commute round trip from ABF and it's good. In fact I have to get ready to leave for work right now I'll talk to you all later. I think this Friday I am going to reenroll in the 401K and IRA plan and that's pretty much it. I'm back at square 1 worked at GFS for 8 years prior to ABF and now I'm back at GFS it's how it goes.MACK E-6, scott180, LtlAnonymous and 6 others Thank this. -
@Mike2633 Glad to hear it all worked out in the end! One of my only regrets from my time at US Foods was not inquiring about an open shuttle position before it was filled by a new hire off the street. Looking back, it would have been a great opportunity to gain doubles and triples experience and it probably would have kept me from applying to FedEx for little while longer.
Mike2633, Cardfan89 and High Stepper Thank this. -
@road_runner
So how many days did you work at R&L? Did they get really pissed at you? Lol -
My pallet jack and uniform came in last Monday and by Wednesday I made the choice to make last Friday my last day. I told them Thursday night and Friday morning they pulled me aside and asked for my badge
They were pretty pissedscott180, snowbird_89 and Mike2633 Thank this.
