Averitt been good to me, and I’ve already called out due to a hurricane.

I may call out again. Manager seemed apathetic, but when I told him I have to look out in the best interest of my family he didn’t give me a smart remark, or a beach face like past employees.

hoping this next hurricane zigs and zags somewhere else

From when I was at XPO I only called out once. A couple times I got there and got told my route was cut for the day and head home.

CCFS will let me know before I even leave the house, especially since I have about 85-90 miles to my first drop in the morning. If a storm is coming in while I’m out there then I’ll get told to start coming back, regardless of any drops or pickups I have to do yet.

I typically did when I was on linehaul. In past instances I’d get to the hub and they would give me a BS via in crap weather because of all the other call offs. So if I can stay home and not get written up, don’t have to ask me twice. Not worth the risk IMO.

I’ve never had to. They usually cancel everyone and shut us down if it’s bad enough.

Had to turn around once because the snow hit earlier and farther along my route than forecasted, and I would’ve ran out of hours at the speed I was going. The picture was my view when I pulled over to knock the ice off my wipers and check the radar one last time before calling it.

Another time I should have turned around, again due to a bad forecast, but I pushed through and got on the phone with other drivers to convince them to lay down at the hub instead of risking it like I was.

Heck yes I call out! Linehaul driving across Iowa, Freezing rain, dropping temperature, gusty winds, and a light trailer? No way. I would call in for weather about three times a winter, maybe 4. The last two years the company started cancelling loads when it got too bad, but as last winter was MY LAST WINTER, I called in a few times where I may have pushed on in the past. I'm retired now. Two guys at work tried to give me some grief a few years ago, challenging my manhood. Weak stuff. They both went off the road and trashed a truck and trailer. Safety fired both of them. They both found new driving jobs paying 10s of thousands less per year.
Dispatch used to give me ####, but when they saw I didn't care, they let up. After 23 years with a CDL- No moving violations, no DOT accidents, and never put it in a ditch. I made hundreds, maybe thousands, of mistakes, but I tried to be careful and was a bit lucky. Sept. 30 was my last day- no more winters!!

    Think I’m calling out tomorrow.

I work 5pm-430ish and the hurricane hits at 8.

assuming traffic is fine and not flooded I get two hours to make it home…

Modern problems require a modern solution. Or in my case an almost to the side of my truck this morning.

Pulled onto the street from the barn and it lit up. Got it parked along the curb, turned the power off and unhooked the negative battery cables for 30 minutes. Didn’t fix it.

Managed to back up at 1mph, make a right turn and go 2mph in our yard. Dropped the trailer, and almost put my boot up my trucks rear. It’s over at Nelson International getting looked at.

Got put in one of our line haul trucks, which wouldn’t be so bad except it’s about 2-3 feet longer than mine. Which made it interesting getting into a few tight spots this morning.

The guys at the prison I deliver and pickup at were laughing at my lack of backing abilities today, and so was I. Lol.

Anyways I didn’t crash or hit anything or put it in the ditch at another tight customer.

My word of the day can’t make it past the filter on here, so I’ll just say yeesh.

You dont rotate trailers and trucks regularly? My yard has us switching between 48', 28', 34', 40' and occasional 53' trailers constantly. I'll pull 3-4 trailers a day, often switching between a tandem axle or single screw. Small terminal or big? Makes backing a headache.
