Remember, the freight and loads are worth everything, the driver is worth nothing.
I spent 3 years running spokane to casper and back constantly. Didn't matter if the roads were closed and barriers down. "Driver you have full locking axles/diffs, v-bar chains, and accounts in need of servicing. Drive around the road blocks."
Lucky I never got caught or stuck. Many hours spent driving 5mph though. Guess dispatch was 100% right as always. They'll never pay enough for this ####.hotrod1653, Lumper Humper and road_runner Thank this. -
How many years have you linehaul guys been on nights? I’m curious about how you guys dealt with the various challenges mainly in regards to “homelife.” I’m personally going on 3 years.

My smaller terminal usually has to have around 10 years to get a mostly daytime bid. Like around a 3pm gate time. Maybe 12-15 years to gate before noon.
I'm not line yet but my plan is to not have a life outside of work, just like I always have since I started trucking.Lumper Humper Thanks this. -

My motivation was that I went from point A to B before having to turn back to point A. Shutting down my truck for the night cause "the roads are too scary" was not an option when you are running a daycab. I remember my very first winter running doubles from Three Forks to Missoula and back. I was absolutely terrified and scared ####-less going up and down Homestake Pass my first time. I mean, I've had nights running through Iraq where I wasn't this freaked out. Then I had all kinds of people calling me on my way back asking ....no demanding to know where the hell their freight was since I was over two hours overdue and they had a whole dock waiting on me.
But as you probably know ... Eventually the trips started getting a little bit shorter, the falling snow was just a bit less scarier, and the cold wind started feeling a bit more familiar as you sat down tightening your chains.
Those were some wild rides though. When you started getting used to things and came to realization that this is just your new work environment. And eventually it was everyone else that thought YOU were the crazy one for being this stupid to be out there cruising through the empty interstates. It's crazy how good you get at something.LPjunior1970, Lumper Humper, MACK E-6 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I did like 4 years of mostly nights, with the occasional daytime run when I was on the extraboard. When I finally took a daytime bid, I only lasted a few months before going back to nights. The traffic and other drivers drove me nuts. Now that I've been back on nights for a year, I'm starting to realize I don't like this either. The only good thing is the money but I don't know if its worth it anymore.Speedy356, LPjunior1970, Lumper Humper and 1 other person Thank this.

Running nights is not without its charm, but I wouldn’t want to do it permanently.
Well that, and I want to be done by 3-4 AM, not 9 AM when the sun’s up and sleeping becomes impossible.jmz, road_runner, Lumper Humper and 1 other person Thank this. -
I only did it for about three years working for Reddaway. It initially worked out ok until my ex and I broke up, then my job REALLY worked out. I was making $300-$400 a night (which was really good money for 2012 in my area). My unofficial "bid" was Tuesday through Fridays going from Three Forks to Missoula. Then on that Friday I would bring back trailers that needed to go East to Billings on my ten. I would just leave everything hooked and after ten hours off I did my 7 hour round-trip turn which would immediately kick off my weekend the moment I could get back. Most Saturdays I would be back from Missoula by 4 AM, which would give me a 2 PM start time to run to Billings. It gave me a defacto three day weekend since I didn't have to be back until Tuesday.
I left the gig and went P&D cause someone important came into my life, and it is extremely difficult to balance your professional and personal goals working this type of setup when the other person is working a traditional schedule.jmz, Someguywithquestions, Albertaflatbed and 5 others Thank this.
