OTR is an underpaid lifestyle from what I keep seeing advertised. I might be wrong and some guys make $.50/mile pulling dry van. I haven't seen it yet.
As for touring the country? Meh. I can do that when I am old and retired. Gonna get me the biggest RV they make see the continent! Of course I will drive half the speed limit and use up one & a half lanes so no one can pass me! Why wouldn't I? They are doing it to me right now! Har har har! I am gonna be one of those really old guys that will make people petition their congressmen to pass a law that requires seniors to pass a driving test every six months!!!

You nailed it ! Its not a job, OTR is a lifestlye. Not knowing where your going day to day, not being able to control when you go home and not sleeping in your own bed doesnt sound like a job.Shaggy Thanks this. -
I love the Queen and didn't have to marry her to sleep with!

I agree OTR is a lifestyle but it's not for me. My grandfather always spoke of it and I was glad to work out of a hub at YRC and got to see the northeast but I always liked going back to my bed every night. Too bad the hub is a 120 miles away otherwise I'd still be there.
Marksteven, Shaggy and road_runner Thank this. -
Ok, my turn to get in on the act.
The idiot that loads my truck has a severe case of terminal stupid, but Thursday's stupid really took the cake.
First, he loaded a black engine pod in the nose of the trailer, turned the wrong way. Problem is, they're longer that way, then from the side with the fork slots. That was mistake #1.
The next pallet was loaded next to it, like it should have been. The pallet after that was loaded behind that one, rather then behind the engine since the engine didn't stick back as far. That was mistake #2.
Then the genius takes one of those 200-some pound bathtubs that ship usually ship out of Kentucky and loads it across the trailer, instead of turning it sideways and pushing it up into the hole that was left. Problem is, now an whole empty skid spot was blocked in. That was mistake #3.
When I got to my 3rd stop I find that it's a 700 lb rollaway toll chest stood up on its' side, because of an apparent need to save space now because of all the space he just wasted due to being stupid.
Stop #4 should have been loaded where this tool box was, next to stop #5, which would have squared the load off so the toolbox could sit right side up across the trailer like it should have been.
The LTL business is no better example of passing the buck, and if you want anything done right you have to do it yourself.Gearjammin' Penguin, Marksteven, road_runner and 4 others Thank this. -
One of our loaders once loaded a pallet of metal screen doors into my trailer. They ship standing up and braced in, but this loader managed to knock it down and obliterate the pallet. He left a huge pile of broken wood with the screen doors laying on it, damaging 3 of the screens, leaving it to me too deal with when i got to the delivery. First time i was ever yelled at by a consignee lol

Marksteven and Big Don Thank this.

I used to love those heavy paper rolls I'd get out of West Virginia every now and then (when I was OTR). They always loaded them perfect but one short stop and your trip was ruined! I hated those loads! I would be sweating till they were unloaded.
