SAIA is 15 minutes closer to my house than Holland. Actually, they are the closest barn to my house out of all the carriers. I did not bother to even apply due to their driver facing cameras. I don't have an issue if someone watches me pick my nose or lip-sync Taylor Swift. It's the principle of having a camera pointing at me that shows that management doesn't trust their drivers.

And now ABF is going to them. Brilliant. I heard some of the companies that use the inward facing cameras are phasing them out since it's hurting their recruiting of drivers?

Can someone correct me or add more info?

UPS started putting them in package cars about ten years ago and everyone said they were gonna quit if their truck got one after we saw the first one come in. Not one single guy quit....... nobody is gonna walk away from good money because of that. It's just like all the guys that said they would never drive with e logs that are still driving. There was a point in time where guys were probably making the same threats over having to drive a truck with front brakes and power steering and then 53' trailers. It's changing technology and people are gonna ##### but very very few will actually quit. I was in the same local as a ABF barn and those guys all loved it and made really good money so I doubt anyone will quit.

Not sure about the recruiting angle, although that could be true. I do know that dash cam footage is discoverable for litigation purposes, so why give slip and fall lawyers more potential ammunition?

But the UPS bread trucks is a different sport altogether. For one, it's my understanding that the cameras are inside the freight compartment. And for the other the obvious. UPS is not struggling to fill non CDL seats. Who is their competition? Both DHL and FxG?

In the commercial world it is harder and harder to find qualified drivers that want to put up with the job, FMCSA, and the stupidity which is our fellow drivers that are glued to their phones.

You are right though. People pissed and moaned about the elogs. But you either accepted a driving job that used them or you didn't. It's hard to compete when it's a federal mandate and you have to have them.

With driver facing cams, it's a self imposed company policy. And in this competitive market looking for drivers, someone who doesn't have driver facing cams has just the slighter appeal over someone like SAIA.

First stop of the day. Took 45 minutes with an old cantankerous construction lift, two ratchet straps, a liftgate, some dunnage and enough testosterone to float a battleship. Got 'er did! :D

No with UPS they are driver facing and built into the monitor for the rear view camera, there aren't any in the back. The tractors are getting them too. I understand not wanting to work somewhere where the company doesn't trust you but that is pretty much everywhere. Let's be honest, probably a good 80% of people are driving distracted be it a car, truck, or hell I've even seen people ####ing with their phone on bikes before. It won't be long before all the companies that pay anything have them. Then the competition is the 1099 crew. With the ups package cars, I along with everyone else could have gave up our $38/hr and went to work for Amazon driving a van without one.....$13/hr. UPS freight will have them soon enough if they haven't started getting them already, they get everything package does just a few years later. It's becoming UPS Jr. I completely understand why guys don't want them, I didn't at first either but it's just the way things are going. I welcome them now, if they will help get crappy drivers off the road then that is a good thing. Too many ######## that can't drive out here, I think the insurance companies should put them in cars....that would probably fix a few things too.

At the end of the day the driver cam is a numbers deal. It’s pretty much the insurance hike that’s going on that is the blame. A driver cam is a big discount for carriers. They don’t care about the drivers or safety. It’s all about how much money they can save. Some carriers will save a ton of money. It’s all about the numbers and their bonus check.

I didn’t mind the driver facing cams at US Foods because they paid me enough that I was willing to overlook a lot of bs like that. Those ABF guys are going to have to think long and hard if they want to give up their pay and seniority to start at the bottom somewhere else.

I don't think you are wrong. But there are carriers that self insure. Either way, some people will always favor the companies with the least amount of regulations and rules. If everyone starts installing the cameras, well then I have to deal with it.

@double_r what did they say about the Kenworths at your safety meeting? It sounded to me like GFS really doesn't want them, but they may place a token order with Kenworth just to keep Volvo competitive. I bet Kenworth gives GFS the hard sell at the end of the lease and like it or not a few come are way.
