This guy had his load shift with these aluminum coils. He started throwing straps and I asked him if he has any chains and he told me that he wasn't allowed to throw chains because its aluminum. What are some of you veteran guys take on the matter? Me I'd think I'd pad the middle as much as I can and throw enough chains to double the weight and then maybe straps over top. Aluminum or steel I'm anal about coils
Rather odd

Suicide too...he's lucky to be alive. He has two things going against him.
1. He's stupid.
2. He's a coward.
Stupid for leaving the shipper. Coward for not telling whomever that told him not to use chain to Goeth Intercourse Thyself.ReeferOhio, rank, CJndaTruck and 8 others Thank this. -
Loading coils suicide is not fun to start with. Unless my paperwork said no chains, I would be padding the heck out of the chains and making sure they aren't going anywhere.. Lucky for him they didn't roll forward all the way to the front..
How did they reset them if no chains allowed -
Pushed it with the back to the center

He should have put that tarp in front of the coil to stop it from rolling forward and #profit
rank Thanks this. -
Could be
1 - Rookie
2 - Terrified of losing job/load/revenue.
Either way, I'd have refused the load if I couldn't chain with rubber edge corner protection.
Granted, I haven't loaded coils before - there's other freight out there that terrifies me less - like mulch - sigh. -
No chains on a coil? I call bull. The shipper could be reported to the FMSCA couldn't they? Aren't chains mandatory on coils regardless of material?
Drivers these days being afraid to say no is making the roads incredibly unsafe.TaylorMade407 Thanks this. -
Actually, most of the aluminum coils are sleeved so you can use chains. But, there are some, that won't let you use chains, straps only! Pretty stupid if you ask me, and I run F/B. Hell, there's one place we go that won't even let you use bungee's on the front/back of tarp, ropes only. Fortunately, most of the aluminum is getting palletized now so its easier to deal with. Suicide coils are the most dangerous thing we haul, and they will kill you. I agree with OP you need to be anal about coils.
TaylorMade407 Thanks this. -
Vertical coils, the shippers do not allow chains. Alcoa, Wise Metals in Muscle Shoal, AL, etc. But when I have hauled coils shotgun, there were no limitations on chains.
Highway Sailor and TaylorMade407 Thank this. -
I did a pair of aluminum coils,.. they had a metal liner in the center and a thin tin like sleeve wrapped around the outside. I chained them pllus I put my cheapo plastic edge protectors just in case the liner dinged up. I tend to over torq the you know what when I lock down coils.
Unless they were eye to the sky,. no way I would not have used chains.
That guy should play the lottery. He's lucky to be alive.
HurstwhoopNride, Bean Jr., Highway Sailor and 1 other person Thank this.
