I get from reading the forums that the first year of driving will suck, doesn't seem to matter who you work for. And maybe you might earn 35k. So, is there an advantage to signing with a company that pays for the CDL class or paying for it yourself? Read that people have grills, crock pots, etc., for their comfort but does anyone have RV type toilets with them, like the chemical toilets? What about satellite radio, do companies pay for them or is that something I would have to carry with me?
I have retired from fed service and looking at 2nd career, been wanting to do this since the 80's when my mother was working at the AZ port of entry on I-10. Would appreciate your response and experiences.
Read the forum, still have couple of questions?

I didn’t think the first year sucked, i trained at roehl and had a pretty good time, learned a lot, met some nice people. I didn’t make a fortune but the job and life experience i gained was invaluable.
The job only sucks if you let it suck. Good luck!Dan.S, Razorwyr, blairandgretchen and 3 others Thank this. -
If you let a company pay for the school for you, you will be indentured to them for at least a year. That's not a bad thing if it is a good company. If you can pay for the school yourself, then you can work for anyone who will hire you.
With the amenities you listed, it sounds like you are looking at OTR companies. Some LTL will let you go from the dock to being a driver and some food service companies will hire the inexperienced drivers. -

My first year wasn't too bad,and I did the whole mega company training thing. I did manage to get a slot in their smaller flatbed division and even ran some dedicated freight/lanes for a few months. Did my contracted year and moved on to greener pastures.

Regarding pay, if you are asking does the school come out of your pay, no it doesn't. That's the indentured part. They send you to school and all you are required to do is work for them for a year or more. Should you leave before the year is up, various companies have various policies about paying it back. Some want the entire cost back, some just want the remainder of the contract (you leave at 7 months, they want the cost of the remaining 5 months, etc).the1simp Thanks this. -
Yes those toilets are used by some drivers. Not me. I’m like Kim Il Jong. I have never pooped.

Navajo is a decent outfit; I'd work there.
If you can post the ad about Navajo paying for CDL school, I'd like to see it. That's a good benefit.

Some companies have satellite radio, refrigerators, APU, television, power for computers, etc. and other amenities included in the trucks and many don't charge a fee for that.
Freymiller www.drive4freymiller.com is another good refrigerated company with fancy trucks and also has tuition reimbursement for drivers that recently graduated from a cdl school; the details for that are on the website under "Restore Program."

Britton Transport is another good outfit that hires new cdl grads. You will need a passport or passport card if you want any Canada runs.Last edited: Jan 10, 2018
