Recruiters and carriers

    Is it a wise idea to seek the assistance of recruiters in trying to get on with a company that will train? Which recruiters are any good and which should be avoided? Same question regarding those carriers that train in-house. Which are good to get on with, and which are best avoided? I've heard nothing but bad regarding CRE, but I don't know much else.

    Background: I've mentioned on another post that I have the opportunity to get subsidized private training, but the responses to that post indicated that, aside from having experience, carriers only hire those they train in-house or those who otherwise received training through an accredited program. My circumstances are such that I need to get on with a carrier that trains. I will go anywhere in the US if I have to.

    The recruiters get paid to fill seats...and you will never get the full truth out of any of them. They will sale you a picture of something wonderful..only to find out different when you get there. Yes, stay away from CR England..because you will get the raw end of the deal.

    The guys on here are correct by what they told you when it comes to getting trained. If you recently got your cdl then you can choose a company that will give you 6 weeks OTR training. If you don't have your cdl and you are looking into getting it, then I would look at Millis because they have a better in house truck driving school and then training. No I am not a recruiter..I just did a lot of research on them, and every driver I have talked to likes the company.

    You do not need to go to a company paid school to start off in this business. You can, and in my opinion should, go to a good PTDI cerified school. I would recommend going to a community college if the school is certified. When you go this route you are not tied to a company for a year or more and you might be treated a little better if the company does not have their hooks in you. Just remember that any recruiter is not there for you. They work for a different song and may not have your best interest in mind.

    Just about all of us recommend that you do a lot of research before jumping in. We really can not recommend where to go or who to work because we are not you. We can however relate our pass experiences and you can analyze those. You should sit down and make a list. Put down what you want out of a company, what type of benefits, pay, type of truck like tanker, flats, refer, and so on. Make a goal list and what you expect 5 years from now. Maybe you want to specialize your trailing and a goal how to reach it.

    That way you are going to get a good picture of what to do and not to do. Ask very specific questions. So many new drivers come on here and ask "where should I work". Check out some places that fits you and then ask. You just might get a driver that went there not too long ago and can tell you what to expect. Before you even start to look for a school get a copy of your driving record from the DMV. If you have a record you may be unemployable. We have seen a few drivers that paid out their you know what and gone to school only to find out from the companies they can not work there.

    So sit down and start listing what you expect and like. If you're married be sure to include your wife because your job will effect her to. Your list can have everything you can think of but be sure to prioritize. I would have something like this to start off.

    School- PTDI certified.
    Do companies recognize the school.

    Companies- Turnover rate.
    Type of field- LTL,Flatbeds,or Refer.
    Medical insurance for me and my family. What's the payout-70-30 or 80-20. Does it include dental.
    Pay. What type of raises.
    Vacation.
    Home time.
    Does the equipment look clean and do they take care of it.

    The list can go on and on plus it can be tweak at any time. At least this way you'll have an idea on where you'd like to go and not just go into the industry blind. Say you might want to be a specialized heavy hauler in a few years. You'd want to go to companies that could help you along. You just do not want to put yourself out there for companies to use you. You'll want to use them just as much.

    Con-way truckload is nice.. uh u need to put up small amount of money for school I think but give em a call my recruiter never lied to me

    there are as many ways to go to get in the buisness as there are companies
    seems to me the people that get thier CDL privately are better off
    not beholden to the company for a year to pay back schooling
    particularly colleges that offer training are usually smaller classees more attention

    every company after that offers more traing in there specfic trucking application
    actually only very few companies train to get your CDL most hire from CDL schools

    just at our company recruiters that go into the schools are drivers too
    not just salesmen I recruited at 5 schools in NJ this week with the truck
    between runs and hometime
