This is why we have cargo insurance, and why most of my reefer loads are chilled and not frozen. Frozen goods are a PITA to deal with. As long as you can verify the logs from your reefer and they show it was set at -10 and was working properly, let the insurance company do their job and handle the claim. In the meantime, find out if the shipper wants the product back, and if not let your insurance carrier determine what should be done with the product. They own it now so it belongs to them.

Never roll through the gate with the unit defrosting, stop down the street, run a manual defrost, and let it pull back down to set temp

I wouldn't go back to that Consignee that's for SURE. Pretty low class.
