Yes you can add about 5/32nds more depth
Generally only cut the big straight grooves -
When a tire wears out there's usually a deeper tread left on the outside edges of the tire. Most guys set their re-groove to that depth and cut the center treads. The tool is kind of like a soldering gun but instead of a wire that gets hot, there's a V shaped blade. They work great and you can usually get a few extra month out of your tires

cord material below the grooves has to have a protective covering of tread material at least 3/32nd-in. thick and there is not much way to know that without a lot of expensive equipment, so the core is essentially scrap. FMCSR 569.7skro47 Thanks this. -
On a dump truck I used to haul loads for a demo company I would re grove recaps when they wer almost slick. Usually ruined th sidewall before the tred was gone. I figured if the cap had not come off before all the tread was gone it was good to re grove. I worked well.

What type. Model regroover to buy.
-
so can you regroove rethread or just virgin tires?

I've been reading today. Looks like all tires. Just don't go too deep. Need to leave the chords covered with rubber.
I seen one guy use an all to see how deep the rubber was before he started peeling rubber.
Some say even after you regroover, the tire can be recapped.
