I was a CDL A driver for 14 years & am now pursuing a degree. I’m conducting research on safety awareness among seasoned commercial drivers. I’m reaching out because, as an experienced driver, you understand this better than anyone.
If you’re open to it, I’d love to hear your thoughts & suggestions on how to help drivers remain safety conscious after years on the road. Below are questions for prompts or you can simply reply with your own ideas.
1. How many years have you been driving?
2. In your experience, what causes seasoned drivers to get too comfortable or “on autopilot” over time?
3. What would actually help experienced drivers stay sharp and safety-focused?
(Examples: quick refreshers, peer discussions, tech reminders, recognition programs, etc.)
4. What types of safety programs or reminders do you personally find useful—and which feel like a waste of time?
5. Is there anything else you think I should know for my research?

You as a 14 year seasoned driver, should have all the answers. You should’ve started with why you left driving, besides going for a second career, then go on.

All safety programs are busy work to keep office trolls occupied so they can pretend to have a relevant job.
Safety comes from the Driver!

1. Almost 17 years
2. From my observations, there are drivers that get a little too ####y. They could run the same highways each day, but they will treat it as though they could run it with their eyes closed. Maybe they take a curve a little faster each time than the advisory speed limit suggests. Maybe they think they are above Mother Nature and don't slow down in bad weather. Some refuse to get out and look while backing, and end up hitting trucks or other objects.
Me personally, I try not to get too comfortable or on autopilot, but I'm far from perfect. I've not had my mind on the task at hand, and a sudden stop caused me to have a hard brake event before. That was a wake up call and I've tried to become more locked in each day.
3. I stay sharp and safety focused with coffee lol. In all seriousness, I try to get adequate sleep. I also like to make sure that I stay ahead of schedule if possible. I think that helps me focus more on operating safely and less on meeting deadlines. Many drivers complain about adaptive cruise and auto braking, and I'm one of them lol. Both of which have forced me to change how I drive, and now I drive with a better sense of isolation on the highways. I make it a point to avoid driving in clusters. Keeping the aggressive drivers in front of me helps me to stay alert and aware. Sometimes the outward camera and elog system installed are nice reminders when I make mistakes. I get coachings periodically for speeding, rolling stops, unsafe parking.Lonesome Thanks this. -
4. We get periodic coachings or even calls from the safety dept when there is unsafe behavior going on. Both can be aggravating, but it is helpful.
5. I can't think of anything else for your research at this moment. I'll come back if I think of something else.
