I called Saia a few minutes ago. Dialed a local number, but got corporate instead. The nice lady asked when I had applied, and I told her when and also about the phone call from the director of safety. She said that the hiring process involves a lot of paperwork and can take quite a while to process. She gave me an email address to send an email to inquire about the status of my application. She said that if they reply, I should get direct contact info to whomever I'll be dealing with. We'll see.

That is correct and when you finish the school you will probably be a combo driver until you can get a bid.

    An update

Never did hear anything back from Saia.

I applied online for part-time dock worker positions at FedEx Freight (8/17/17) then Old Dominion (8/26/17).

8/28/17, I went to the Old Dominion terminal and had a really good talk with the TM. He had posted the job on the Thursday, and I saw the posting on Friday (it said that it had been only on there for I think about 8 hours). By the time I finished applying it was early Sat. morning. Monday afternoon, I went to the terminal. The TM said that he had not even looked at who had applied online since he had just posted the job a few days ago. He was glad that I had come in since he doesn’t like to hire a name on paper…he likes to meet the person face-to-face (paraphrasing). He said the shift would be an evening shift (approx. starting at 4:30pm for 3 or 4 hours if I remember correctly). He told me a little about how their driver training program worked and other things. He told me it would be about a week before he made a decision as he wanted to look at the other applications (I think there was 6 or 7 others at that time). As I said earlier, we had a really good talk.

FedEx Freight called me 8/29/17 with info about the shift (Tues to Sat, midnight to 4:30am). I asked the lady if I could call her back with a decision. I called the TM at Old Dominion to see if I was still in the running. He said I was and that it still wouldn’t be till the next week for his decision. I talked with my wife about the FedEx offer and I decided to not accept it. I decided to wait to hear from Old Dominion instead. Day and a half later I called FedEx Freight back and had a nice talk with the lady. She understood my reasons for not wanting that shift (especially for the Sat to Sun where I’d be half asleep in church).

9/6/17, I got an email from the TM at Old Dominion asking if I was still interested in the job. Of course I immediately replied that I was still interested. He than replied that I would be getting some emails from corporate to fill out online and that eventually I’d meet him personally again.

9/11/17, I got an email from Old Dominion with an offer of employment. Also I electronically signed a statement regarding consent to background checks, reference checks and drug testing.

I had called Dayton, a day or 2 before I saw the Old Dominion job posting, and left a message with the receptionist. I had intended on going back to Dayton in person the next week to see if a part-time dockworker position had come open.

I have no criminal background and nothing to hide anywhere in my past life, so I’m trusting God that all will be good with whatever Old Dominion finds in their checks.

    Another update

I start on the dock at OD this coming Monday. I'll have to be there a min. of 6 months before looking into their driver training program.

Good luck. A friend of mine is a dockworker at OD and said they're pretty laid back as far as productivity expectations are concerned. Just take your time and concentrate on not destroying freight. They'll probably let you do yard jockey work in no time considering you already know how to back trailers. That could possibly help you get into their driver training program quicker than a non-CDL-holding dockworker. I think you made a good decision going there.

From dealing with the manager thus far, he's easy to talk to and is laid back. I'm glad I'm getting the chance to work at OD. I want to be efficient in my work...fast enough to be productive, but not to fast to be destroying freight as you mentioned. Yard jockey work would be awesome...lots of backing practice...it's been awhile since I've did some backing.
