I wasn't aiming at a salary job, it just sorta happened. Gotta say, this is less stressful than CPM. On the other hand, my earning potential is capped. On the other hand, I really don't have to work more than 70 hr (I rarely max out anyway) because there is no reason now to cheat on my logs. On the other hand, hourly is most fair as we are paid for ALL our time. On the other hand, I get paid full-boat when I sit for a day. On the other hand ... you get the picture. Here is 4 minutes of talk about this. Your input is much appreciated.

My experience is cpm and hourly. The former I would sit waiting to get loaded, strap/chain, tarp and check out/shutdown for the night and all that time not get paid anything. I was gone for weeks at a time with no weekends save for a 34 reset. The settlement per week was over 1k for 3ishk mi/wk.

Now I am hourly and I do not really do anything. I spend most of my time in the sleeper with a good book while a crew loads and unloads. When i do work I am opening or closing a door and driving 8 miles between a store and a warehouse. I am paid regardless of what it is I am doing. I am home every night and every weekend. Some days are 8 hours and others 12. I do not care about rush hour anymore and the stress level is pretty much non existant. I would estimate that I am making around 1800-2000 miles worth in equivalent cpm with this job at 40ish hours a week.

I worked salary in another life and it is for the birds. In summation, I love hourly even though I took a pretty good pay cut versus otr and cpm. Just like this video says, preference will vary.

If you're happy then good for you. That type work isn't for everyone. I wouldn't do it because I prefer coast to coast. There's a niche out there for most drivers.

Only thing is when you pay a guy salary he #####es when he actually has to earn what he's making. That's why people do percentage or cpm.

With kb, drivers do a whole lot of sitting.as why the owner pays salary.Otherwise he would have a worse turnover then he does now.

I worked for a place that paid us an artificially low hourly rate and then paid more hours than it actually took. We used to make a delivery from Evanston, WY to Brighton, CO. If I remember right we were getting $14 an hour.

It took an hour to load, 7 hours to drive there. We'd stay at a truck stop nearby since they only accepted deliveries in the morning. One hour to unload and 7 hours home. So a total of 16 hours, but we got paid for 30 hours. Plus they paid us $50 cash per diem for each night in the truck and paid for all our meals. All time and a half after 40 hours.

It got even crazier when we started going to new places farther away. Miles City, MT paid 48 hours and Williston, ND paid 60 hours. It got to the point where we were turning in more hours on payroll than there were in a week. One guy had to take time off to catch up. Didn't work for two weeks but still cashed in 168 hours a week on his timecard.

The whole system was screwy to say the least. It was designed by an illiterate Texan that I'm almost certain was sent to us just so they didn't have to deal with him near the headquarters.

I work for an hourly wage. It allows me to take my time driving, strapping and tarping and doing it all right. No driver should be compensated in any other way in my honest opinion.
