Wow, thanks Lunatic Fringe & Chinatown. I'm doing nightshift now & it sucks, hate nights. Which makes me wonder, when I say "...see this country..." I loved driving during the daylight hours to actually see the landscape, etc. I did often start before the sun rose & ended after sun set however drove mainly daytime. Loved the views. I've decided to get my CDL permit here in NYS first. Maybe that would offer better options.
Chinatown, I was under the impression refrigerated was mainly driving during nights. Thoughts?
Honestly, I hate nights, sleeping during daylight sucks bigtime (for me). No matter how much I've tried, never been able to get decent sleep during daylight hours, never feeling well rested.
Somewhere on the forum I read about CDL regulations changing about Feb 22, so I'd like to beat that time line. Testing makes me nervous.
Curious, would it be presumptuous to "share" my desires with any school/carriers I apply to? You know, "I seek to roll during the day non-stop all over the country and check out my house once every 3/4 months". I've rolled alongside countless semi's on the road during the daytime (Stevens, KLLM, CFI) so I figured yeah, they must be roll during daytime sleep at night runs/companies. Am I deluded? Can you get the drift I hate nights?
Well, night lunch is almost over, gotta run. Again, thanks folks.

Probably better off going with dry van because refrigerated does have some weird delivery times.

OTR is not an 8-5 job. While it's possible to do most of your driving in the daylight a number of factors beyond your control will affect your driving schedule. A few things you may not have considered:
1. You will need to park the truck after your shift. Most truck stop parking fills up before dark. In some areas they're full hours earlier. You may get lucky and find a spot in a mom & pop truckstop, but more than likely you will ROAM THE EARTH looking for a safe, legal space to park the truck more than once. This will condition you to shut down while the parking is still plentiful. If you shut down at 4 pm your break is over at 2 am. Your dispatcher isn't going to want you sleeping until 7. He'll expect you to be rolling at 2.
2. The rolling clock. Your day will include 11 hours of driving, a 30 minute break and a 10 hour break. Not quite 24 hours. If you finish the driving and breaks in 22 hours that means each subsequent day will start 2 hours earlier.
3. Just when you get used to #1 and #2, something happens that drags out your day for 10 hours or more. Whether it's the Wyoming DOT closing I80 while you're on I80, a difficult shipper/receiver, a breakdown or an accident something will happen at least once a month that throws your schedule off and you'll have to live with it until your 34 hour reset. -
Much driving time depends on the appointment times.
Some days maybe 11 hours and some days 6 hours or less.
My dispatcher called me about shutting down early and told me to keep driving.
I explained to him that if I keep driving, I'll arrive at the customer about 14 or 16 hours early and have to sit in a dirt parking lot with no facilities at all until my appointment time, because the customer won't take a truck early, not even 10 minutes early. I refused to drive the truck because I know what I was doing with my trip planning.

When I worked linehaul (OTR) my husband and I would stay out for 12 weeks at a time, then take a week off to see the grandkids. -
If you go with Wilson Logistics, ask for the school in Missoula, Montana because it's for dry van.
The one in Springfield, Missouri is refrigerated pulling Prime trailers. -
